Frank Shorter was the Olympic Gold Medalist in the marathon race (26.2 miles) in Munich and the Silver Medalist in the Montreal in 1976. On July 12, 1987, I ran the Chicago Distance Classic as part of the AT&T running team. I beat Frank Shorter in that race. That was a magical experience in my life. A traumatic event is defined as “a distressing experience that causes significant emotional, psychological, or physical harm.”

Examples of traumatic events include such things as a car accident, a death of a loved one, a breakup, a loss of a job, or an ongoing series of events, like a chronic health problem, continuous physical, emotional or sexual abuse. 

These traumatic events typically trigger a range of intense feelings and emotions, including fear, helplessness, and a sense of being overwhelmed. 

Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is defined as “positive psychological changes that emerge as a result of struggling with adversity and trauma.”

PTG includes the idea that individuals can not only recover from a trauma but also experience significant personal development and personal transformation from it.

PTG involves changes in understanding oneself, others, and the world, and can include increased personal strength, appreciation for life, and a significant shift in priorities. 

How can you use PTG to overcome any traumas you have experienced in your own life?

Traumas are life’s hardest moments, but can be the very thing when viewed as just a temporary setback that propels you into a new stronger version of yourself and create a significant positive impact in your life.

Your attachment style, is a psychological blueprint that influences how you relate to others.

Attachment theory was developed by British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, John Bowlby and later expanded by American-Canadian developmental psychologist, Mary Ainsworth.

Attachment theory is based on how you bonded with your primary caregivers (e.g., your mother, grandmother, aunt, father, etc.) which tends to mirror how you bond with others as an adult.

There are four types of personal and professional attachment styles: (1) secure; (2) anxious; (3) avoidant; and (4) disorganized.

Attachment style is very important in your personal life.

Attachment style plays a surprisingly powerful role in your professional life as well.  

Your professional attachment style influences leadership, communication, collaboration, negotiation, and even how you handle success or failure.

How can you change your current personal or professional attachment style?

Creating a new attachment style by rewiring your own emotional habits allows you to create healthier connections and build new relationships in a new way to create a positive impact in your own life.

What is Your Attachment Style?

On May 21, 2025, in Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the Indiana Pacers rallied from a 14-point deficit with under three minutes remaining in regulation to defeat the New York Knicks in overtime,   The Pacers were down 14 with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter. Aaron Nesmith, with six 3-pointers in the final five minutes, fueled the comeback. 

Taking and making 3 point shots in a game also offers a number of reward outcomes that are not available by taking and making only 2 point shots.  The reward outcomes are only available by taking, “3 > 2” risk actions in a basketball game.

You will face adversity many different times in your own life.

You can win more often personally and professionally in your own life by taking 3 > 2® risk actions.

A Winning Attitude - Why 3 is greater than 2

Let me share another true story with you.

A painful one.

A couple of years ago, as I was closing my car door with my left hand in the parking lot a local business, I got distracted and I slammed the car door with my left hand on all four of my fingers on my right hand, trapping all four of my fingers on my right hand in between the car door and the car body, with the car door locked.

Ouch!

It was immediately extremely painful and was an instance of adversity in my own life.

Sometimes a situation in your own your life "slams the door" on you, causing you unexpected pain or an obstacle that leaves you momentarily trapped or is a setback in your life.

You feel your access to progress in your own life is blocked by a locked door.

When you find yourself in such a situation in your own life, how can you pickup your keys and unlock the door that is blocking you?

Life will slam doors on you from time-to-time.  You always have the keys in own pocket to unlock such doors.  You my drop your own keys.  Even in such a situation when you do, you can bend down, pick them up, unlock that door and keep going and create a positive impact in your own life.
