Much like James Holden and Optimo, Ivan Smagghe is one of the most influential figures behind the founding and continuation of H+P over the past decade.

As such, it is tremendously exciting to release something by his new Smagghe & Cross project. In collaboration with the film composer and programmer, Rupert Cross - who counts big Hollywood blockbusters and Kanye West on his impressive resume - Smagghe & Cross has recently been picking up acclaim through superb releases on Vladimir's Offen Music, Ransom Note and their remix of The Junto Club has been a staple round these parts. Not only that, but the record also features none other than the bold Matthew Herbert (!!!) doing his best Robert Wyatt impression.
Additionally, as a very big fan of the compelling Honey Soundsystem 'Generator' series, I'm really chuffed to have commissioned a special remix featuring Jackie House with Kevin Clarke performing words by DJ Marke B. Swedish Superstars, Samo DJ & Pedrodollar also turn in a trippy groover AND as the icing on the cake; have enlisted the services of the DJ who played the first ever H+P party back in 2007, Pilooski- completing another circle during the 10th anniversary year..

Smagghe & Cross feat. Matthew Herbert - In The Morning

Following the much loved release of cult 1981 Yugoslavian film soundtrack Visitors from the Galaxy back in March, the innovative @Foxandhisfriends label is back with another fascinating package. This time it comes in the form of a previously unreleased bit of experimental electronica from Zagreb and former Yugoslavian collective NEP, complete with a modern re-rub by @Snuffo. 

NEP was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 that saw founder Dejan Krsic collaborate with various artists in a quest to re-think the stale concepts of art history and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. Influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol in theory, and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa) of diverse rule-breaking activities that covered graphic design, music, photography, video, news media and theoretical work. Musically, NEP focused on experiments in ambient and tape-music, mostly self-released or on hard to find compilations like The Cassette Played Poptones from 1988. 

NEP on this 1989 track was led by Dejan Krsic, now famous graphic designer and art historian in Croatia, but other collaborators include Laibach and Borghesia photographer Jane Stravs, artist and TV director Gordana Brzovic, Jovan Culibrk, now Bishop at The Serbian Orthodox Church and Anja Rupel, singer of cult Yugoslavian synth-pop group Videosex.

In 1989, as the group reached the peak of its powers, the ‘Decadance’ track presented here was conceived in the studio, but was never published. Restored and mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes and pressed on wax for the first time, this single is a sneak-peak into the world of POP NOT POP, an album and graphic book merged into one multimedia entity that will be released later this year

With pumping Roland 808 beats, sampled vocals from Linda Cooper asking herself “How do I dance to this music?” and a cold wave groove, it is brilliantly retro futuristic and is sure to become a real cult classic.

Remixing it is German producer Snuffo, the masked hero of the house, acid and old school loving Snuff Crew. He splits the title vocal into a new cut-up form that says, “Dance to this music” and reworks the track as seven wonderfully mechanical and metallic minutes of synth heavy grooves. Little stabs, crisp percussion and chilly drums all demand you dance.

This is a brilliant release that is sure to spark plenty of interest in the sorely overlooked collective that is NEP. 

What’s more, the first 100 copies bought directly from the label will include a bonus comic strip insert by Marvel collaborator Miroslav Mrva.

2020 will be a year that we will hardly forget. A year of reflection, introspection and sudden changes, many of them forced. How will we remember it after some time? We don't know yet, but the testimony for that future is being shaped today, as always, through artistic creation. This is the case of Fernanda Arrau, founder of the record label, United Colors of Rhythm. She has decided to baptize the fifth EP of her career and her label’s second release, as ‘Quiebre’ (breakdown in English). The EP was created a couple of years ago, almost entirely in the confinement of Madrid (one of the epicenters of the first European wave of Coronavirus) at the DJ and Chilean producer’s home.
