I wrote this after reading the classic book, My Antonia

Small Nebraska town
Red grasses all around
A boundless swaying landscape topped by endless sky

Eager brown eyed girl
Running through the world
Watching, whispering and laughing in the grass
With a look or a gesture that somehow could reveal 
All the meaning contained in common things

Autumn afternoons
We trailed through ruddy grass
As Antonia shivered in her cotton dress

When the winter came
Her family felt the strain
They were poor and unprepared for winter’s trials
Though she slept in a little cave they dug out of the earth
She was lighthearted and never complained
