"Sun and Moon" is a solar-lunar psalm. It is a song-ritual of self-surrender, truly and without any normative conditions. Hum it and you can calmly enter any darkness or painlessly look into any blinding light. Hum it and be excited with yourself, charmed with yourself, surprised with yourself. Hum it and be able to trust yourself or to surrender. Hum it and be able to become a truly horizontal sky for all the internalized suns and moons that are constantly rising and setting within us. If astral suns and moons are so phenomenal how beautiful must our little inner twilights and dawns, full and new moons be?

‘Amplifying Archives’ is a new broadcast commission by Cường Minh Bá Phạm, Trà My Hickin, Koa Phạm, Stefan Khánh Nielsen, Nic Anette Miller, and Thierry Phung. The project consists of four auditory essays that explore the role of sound in archives and shared heritage. The project invites you to listen to what lies just out of reach of hearing, what has been systematically unheard, and what lies waiting in silence. These works will expand upon the role of sound in connecting to the past in transnational-Vietnamese contexts. 

‘Amplifying Archives’ considers how a focus on heritage might challenge, augment, or complement existing understandings of Vietnamese migration along the following three themes: cố cư (former home), di cư (movements), and an cư (well-settled).

In collaboration with Thomas Phung & Aline Phung

The recordings featured in C.O.T.A II showcase Phung's father engaging in karaoke, a practice that took on significant melancholy after leaving Vietnam in the 1970s, a place he has not returned to since. Phung reflects upon the notion of home in relation to his father's experiences, observing a pervasive sense of alienation throughout his childhood. Witnessing his father's inclination towards solitude and reluctance to venture outside, the artist contemplates the unspoken emotions surrounding their familial bond.

In an effort to bridge the gap in communication, Phung invited his father to express himself through song, recognising his preference for singing over verbal discourse. The resulting recordings underwent a creative transformation, incorporating the artist's original music and selected audio extracts from the family's home video tapes, which then received the signature remix sensibility Phung is known for. The sonic piece is presented in a contemplative and tranquil manner, primarily featuring snippets from various family gatherings, including birthdays, Christmas celebrations, and other significant occasions. The familial conversations captured in these moments are a code-switching blend of French and Vietnamese.

Revisiting these documented slices of life has proven to be a therapeutic experience for Phung. By intertwining his own creative contributions with the family archives, he seeks to further personalise and claim ownership of these cherished memories.

Memories of a distant homeland, hopes, and dreams form the heart of this 45-minute sonic sound space, where the hazy and sedated sounds and fleeting conversations reveal the delicate interplay of what was, what might have been, and the vibrant tapestry of their lives today, as the Children Of The Apocalypse navigate displacement and embrace new beginnings.

Thierry Phung is an artist, producer and videographer born in Montpellier, South of France and now based in London. He released music on Pan-Asian electronic label Eternal Dragonz, Vietnamese trailblazers Nhac Gãy, and made an EP ‘Children of the Apocalypse’ on Kelman Duran and Comic Ans’ label Scorpio Red. This one was made after a return from Vietnam in late 2019, through multiple lockdowns, up until the present day. Defined by its heavily textural atmospherics and cinematic composition, Children of the Apocalypse serves as an attempt to in ONY’s words: “soundtrack the video game I will never create and a reflection on my family history, what it means to be Vietnamese in the south of France.” He also has been crafting stories on his genre-bending NTS radio show. He mines whatever he finds to craft an immersive and strange musical environment. His shows are by turn dark, ethereal and uncanny, often all at once.

For the fawn, the glimmer of light reflected on a blade is no different than the sun’s rays peeking through the leaves. It sees it for what it is: an object, glistening and still. Man wields weapons to preserve oneself or annihilate another. But what if man, too, could witness the beauty of the sharp tip of a blade without bloodlust? The question echoes through the dense forest as night falls quietly. And still, I ask it.
