One of a series of mixes using materials from the BBC Sound Archive.
This was made entirely with analogue equipment, including turntables (much of the BBC sound archive was at the time stored on vinyl), reel to reel tapes, and cartridge players.
It was commissioned for the BBC Radio 5 programme Cult Radio and broadcast in 1993.
The programme was presented by Marc Riley and produced in Manchester by Mary Ward Lowery.

A mix of recordings from the last decade of the twentieth century. Interviews with artists and others, excerpts of radio packages, assorted outtakes and detritus from a brief career in broadcasting.

This was put together for Radiophrenia https://radiophrenia.scot/ and broadcast in February 2022. Thanks to Barry and Mark for putting it out there.

Technical note.
These recordings span a period of three or four years when the BBC was moving over to digital technology. The variation in sound quality reflects the technology used and the source.
The earliest interviews were recorded on cassette with a Sony Pro Walkman, transferred to 1/4" tape for editing and mixing down onto a final 1/4" for broadcast.
Later a DAT recorder was used for interviews - the DAT was also then transferred to analogue tape for editing and mixing.
The third iteration was DAT to digital editing using Pro Tools.
Some of the recordings used here are from broadcast tapes, some from unedited 1/4 tapes, some from original DATs.
