An Atchison native has earned a chance to compete on NBC TV’s vocal competition reality show, “The Voice.” 

34-year-old Durrell Anthony, who now resides in California, performed his version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” during the show’s blind audition segment, earning immediate attention from musician-turned “The Voice” judge John Legend.
Anthony, with his choice of panelist mentors to choose from, to help him through the season’s competition, chose Legend.

An Atchison native, turned California resident, is now a contestant on a popular network television vocal competition.
Durrell Anthony, who sang in church as a child, attended college on a vocal scholarship, later turning his longtime love of music into a full time career. That has now earned him a chance to compete on this season of NBC TV’s singing competition “The Voice,” selecting recording artist, and “The Voice” judge, John Legend to serve as his coach after successfully passing the Blind Audition segment of the show earlier this month.

Despite last year’s failed attempt to secure federal funds for elevation of an oft-flooded stretch of highway that connects Missouri to Kansas, at Atchison, planning is underway to make another attempt. Nick Hutchinson, Executive Director of Mo-Kan Regional Council, “a designated regional planning commission and economic development district, recognized by the states of Kansas and Missouri and the federal government,” according to the council’s website. 
Hutchinson met Tuesday with the Atchison County Commission, seeking support for the second attempt to gain the needed funds.

Federal funds possible for flood-prone hwy

A joint meeting between the cities of Atchison County, and the Atchison County Commission, focused on the proposed budget for the Solid Waste and Joint Communications, was held Monday evening. 
Third District Atchison County Commissioner Casey Quinn provided what she called a rough draft of a possible interlocal agreement regarding distribution of the generated funds of the long-controversial, voter-approved, 1% county-wide sales tax to fund solid waste and joint communications. 
About 45-minutes into Monday evening’s meeting, held at the Atchison Event Center, discussion took a turn, with Atchison City Manager Becky Berger saying the City of Atchison is not interested in moving forward with the current process of including solid waste into the equation. 
Quinn discussed the County’s possibility of placing the matter into the hands of voters, with Berger saying the City has considered a vote to do away with the current sales tax. 
Following a request for the City’s timeline for putting the matter up for a vote, Berger said there’s still room for discussion. 
At the meeting’s conclusion, Berger credited Quinn with the work she’s done on the matter, with both sides to continue discussion in an effort to reach a conclusion and put the long-discussed matter to rest.

Hiawatha Thursday evening joined the nation in remembering George Floyd, who died during a Minnesota arrest, holding an event called “Hiawatha Believes Black Lives Matter.” 
More than 100 people  attended the prayer vigil and peaceful protest, held around the foundation adjacent to the Hiawatha Police Department.   
The event was organized by Shayna Leahy, of Hiawatha. 
The event included comments from Brooke Grier of Hiawatha and Jason Thomas of the Kickapoo Tribe. 
Prayers were offered during the ceremony by Pastor Jim Ferris of Hiawatha’s Calvary Assembly of God Church. 
Among those in attendance, but who did not speak, were Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore and Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.
