Modern Analysis and new material.

many thought this type of sound would never 
come again but we’ve been giving hints over 
the years that we hope this will give people 
the chance to listen to music many may have 
never heard on this side of sound that provides 
a provocative and thoughtful musical workout 
in your mind..

rhythm 🎵 scales ⚖️ with vinyl turntables.

DJ Eft's artistic journey takes him on a mystical exploration, delving deep into the hidden corners of the Pacific Northwest's lush landscapes. Immersed in the natural wonders of the region's ancient forests and majestic oceans, he absorbs the sounds and flavors that permeate these sacred spaces. With each sonic encounter, DJ Eft weaves a tapestry of emotions and experiences that resonate with the essence of his surroundings.

With roots in the pine barrens of New Jersey and streets of Philadelphia, DJ Eft, also known as Mugwert, has become an influential figure in the thriving music scene of his now home town Portland. Eft contributes regularly as a resident, poster designer, and curator to the budding two-room techno forward party "Osmosis", hosted in a 100 year old Chinese restaurant and lounge.

Dedicated in every sense to the work of creating space for dance DJ Eft lays his heart out in everything he does, culminating into something unmistakably emotional and earnest.

DJ Eft describes the mix as 'When recording a mix I need to create a ceremony of sorts where I get the vibe right and light my favorite incense. For this mix my intention was to weave hypnotic techno with bass laden breakbeats and heavier sounds. I ended up playing some chuggy slow tracks at the end to round things out. For this mix I borrowed a friend's cdj 3000's and used a Model 1 mixer recorded out to a Zoom H5 and maximized in Ableton in my basement listening/dj room. I really love this mixer for sculpting smooth blends and having detailed control of filters and frequencies. I had just a few hours left with the equipment by the time I recorded the mix as it was being rented for a party that night. I was able to finish the mix to my hearts content with about 30 minutes to spare and felt really solid about it after a listen.'

For our bicentennial Truancy Volume, Pearson Sound takes the reins. Few artists have meant so much to us over the years, and David Kennedy’s music, DJ sets and mixes have been an instrumental pillar to our foundation at Truants. Under his early moniker Ramadanman, he was responsible for timeless dancefloor anthems like “Work Them“, “Glut” and “Don’t Change For Me“, with his gradual transition into Pearson leaving a hotbed of tracks behind in his discography, as well as a much lauded mix for the FabricLive series. His evolution from Ramadanman days to the Pearson Sound we now celebrate is inextricably linked to the transformation of electronic music this decade, bringing techno, breaks, dubstep, house and UK funky into a singular, amorphous arena. Responsible for many of our favourite 12″s, the last ten years has been filled with a page list of memorable club moments and releases.

Advice to beginning dj’s?

Try not to doubt yourself. Ignore people who put a lot of weight on “technical expertise”. Remember that there isn’t one way to DJ, how you want to approach it is up to you!

Describe the best dj/live set you have seen this year?

It felt like walking through a swamp - slow, heavy, syncopated rhythm. It was a very humid-feeling set. 

Where do you see your rave self in 30 years from now?  

I see myself playing ambient music in my living room and floating around with the lights off. 

Most underrated artist at the moment?

So many but some that come to mind are Bergsonist and Eszaid. 

Favorite DJ trick? 

Not really a trick but I love to switch between 4x4 and syncopated kick patterns like between techno and electro or jungle. It gives room to breath and switches up the energy in the room. 


What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

An end to the idea of the White Technically Adept Guardian of Knowledge Western-European Electronic Musician Man. 
Less sacredness of genres, methods of making music and of DJing.
More ways to play and feel safe for POC, non-binary and women-identifying DJs, artists, ravers, music enthusiasts. 
Less gatekeeping, more experimentation.
More financially accessible raves and parties in New York.

@taylorbratches is a DJ, producer and writer based in New York. She curates the mix series Walking and Falling, an appendage of the Chicago-based DJ mentorship program for female and non-binary artists. As a lifelong poet and dancer, her relationship to rhythm is intimate and ever-evolving. Heavily influenced by artists like Erika, Patrick Russell, Eris Drew, Sassmouth, Abby Echiverri and Derek Plaslaiko, her sets aim to fuse genres and to move people physically and spiritually, creating an experience that is both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. It was made in ecstatic joy - I was jumping up and down and dancing in front of my CDJs while mixing. I improvised it in one take and lead with my intuition.
