May 12, 2000 - Pauline Oliveros - Pauline's Solo at MECA

Asemix is the collaborative project of Mari Maurice (aka more eaze) and Nick Zanca (fka Mister Lies) exploring the blurry space between pop abstraction, electro-acoustic zones and sound collage. Their self-titled debut record is the culmination of a year of remote collaboration, stem-swapping, blind trust and an almost telepathic creative process. 

“I really had no idea what form it would take. It seemed equally likely to manifest itself through song-form or collage,” shares Mari Maurice about her (lack of) expectations at the beginning of the creative process. Nick Zanca continues: “…she sent over a few sketches with a few overdubbed layers of edited improvisations for me to work with, which quickly evolved into a reciprocal back-and-forth.” By the summer of 2020, the duo racked up quite a lot of material, a combination of heavily processed and treated acoustic performances, synth work, field recordings and found sounds. Over the next few months, this material was refined, spliced and moulded into the duo's debut album. Across five tracks and 41 minutes of we’re introduced to a sound world that feels granular yet fluid, and one that is somehow both half-awake and fully immersive. 

Whether it’s the mysterious atmospheres and deep bass rumblings of the opening “Phantom Lung”, the more noisy meanderings of “Rehearsal Earthquake” or the glitchy, fully fledged euphoria of the closing “Communal Nude”, 'Asemix' draws you in. There’s something very welcoming about these sounds, it’s like you’re on the verge of remembering them; a half-forgotten dream, a memory you only have an old image to thank for, in aural form. 

The kinship, shared artistic sensibility and chemistry between Maurice and Zanca is strikingly obvious. The latter calls Asemix “one of the most fruitful and careful collaborations” he’s ever been involved in and the former continues to be in awe of the results: “It still blows my mind how much these pieces feel like they're occupying the same physical space despite recording these tracks on opposite sides of the country.” If this is the spirit and energy they can create remotely, it’s very exciting to imagine what Asemix can make when they finally meet.

June 1, 2007 - Loren Connors at The Rothko Chapel

“Still Lives” is the third solo full length by the Finnish composer Marja Ahti, following a pair of releases on the Hallow Ground imprint. As a collection, it may be seen as a series of studies on the liminality of the listening act and an investigation into the physicality of sound. Ahti forges vivid electroacoustic environments from field recordings, analog synthesizers, acoustic feedback, magnetic tape and digital processing, resulting in a set of articulate, prickly, and surprising compositions. In the artist’s words, “These pieces could be conceived of as vanitas paintings of a kind – selections of mundane or archetypal objects, sounds that have their own distinct qualities, but exist only by virtue of being temporary events. From another angle, one could think of them as shrines – objects assembled and set in a particular relationship to each other, charging each other in their given constellations.” Marja Ahti (b. 1981) is a musician and composer based in Turku, Finland. Originally from Sweden, Ahti has been a part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years in different constellations. She is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner and as a member of the Himera artist/organizer collective.

“Two Duos” is pressed from cellist Okkyung Lee’s most recent OTO Residency; the first side a duo with Jérôme Noetinger on Revox B77 and the second with Nadia Ratsimandresy on Ondes Martenot. Cut together, the two meetings seem to raise three cellos in the search for expressive voice: the cello, it’s magnetic reproduction, and the dual controls of the machine invented to expand on its musical qualities.

On the A side Noetinger’s opening tape hiss establishes a current; an electrical partner who gives Lee room to slide across and stretch out. Progressively the cello is returned, duplicated and manipulated with increased velocity and distortion. Noetinger draws out the full extent of Lee’s extended technique; rewinding strands of Lee's horse hair and transmuting her percussive attacks into shuddering echos, before letting his own concrete interjections spin the duo's sonic tussle into an almost romantic daydream.

On side B the ondes (invented by French cellist and wartime radio operator Maurice Eugene Louis Martenot and so loved by Bernard Parmegiani, Varese and Messiaen) seems shaken from classical tradition and those long, drawn out horrorscapes it has come to be associated with. In a duel with Lee, Ratsimandresy grasps the ondes’ extraordinary capacity for dexterity, nuance and speed, hounding Lee’s cello in a bid to drive her instrument out of the past and into the future.

Two fantastic pairings and a testament to the freshness with which Lee and her collaborators continue to work with their instruments.

Composer Lea Bertucci's collaborative works and solos for saxophone and bass clarinet are often layered and processed through unusual methods, including archaic tape recorders and multichannel configurations. Fascinated by acoustic phenomenon, Bertucci is as likely to perform in a club as in a cave or handball court. Solo and ensemble works are explored in this program, with comments from the artist on technique, technology, and adventurism. Bertucci’s 2022 album, Murmurations, is on Bandcamp.
