Ricardo Villalobos wurde im Jahr 1970 in der chilenischen Hauptstadt Santiago geboren und zog im Alter von drei Jahren mit seiner Familie nach Deutschland, nachdem General Augusto Pinochet 1973 die sozialistische Regierung von Salvador Allende gestürzt hatte. Als Ricardo etwa 10 oder 11 Jahre alt war, begann er, Conga und Bongos zu spielen. Obwohl er die Musik liebte, konnte er sich nie als Musiker sehen. In den späten achtziger Jahren begann er, elektronische Musik zu machen. Von klein auf war er ein großer Fan von Depeche Mode und verfolgte sogar deren Tourneen durch Europa, um sie zu sehen.
