David White (guitar); Tim Armacost (soprano & tenor sax); George Garzone (soprano & tenor sax); John Lockwood (bass); Joris Dudli (drums) This is the third recording of the David White Quintet (Cadence Jazz Records 1057, CIMP 117) and this is a remodeled edition. Besides David, the only holdover from the original quintet (which began in 1993) is Tim Armacost. Joining him on the tenor line is George Garzone, probably best known for his work with The Fringe, a wonderfully inventive Boston-based trio and for which John Lockwood is the bassist. Joris Dudli, Swiss-born, first moved to the U.S. from Austria around 1986. He has recorded on numerous European dates and was/is a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra. This is his first American release. 

So this edition of the David White Quintet presents a very different sound dynamic than his previous unit did, but retained over both units is an identifiable David White methodology which translates into a style of composition and arrangement, present in all his work, which might be characterized as insistent. In fact, insistence, some might say obsessiveness, is part of David’s character. But perhaps it is because David can’t get some things out of his craw which go on to shape and distinguish his music that brings this original vitality to a genre sorely in need of something other than retreads. ~Robert D. Not one to play it safe and swim in waters others have swum, David is an acclaimed jazz guitarist and innovative composer working in a highly original modern vein. 

What defines his music is defiance of labels. To wit: although he is schooled as a bebop guitarist studying with Charlie Shoemake in Los Angeles, he was exploring odd meters and long form composition in the early 1990s (All Stories Are True) long before that was fashionable as it is today. His acclaimed band, Big Neighborhood (nominated for a Grammy with Neighbors), combined eclectic guitar-synth contrapuntalism with edgy improvisation. His current trio project blends elements of rock, progressive, folk and bebop. 

He has worked with George Garzone, Valery Ponomarev, Jeff Ballard, John Lockwood, Tim Armacost, and Stomu Takeishi, among many others, has 7 CDs as a leader, and toured extensively throughout North America. His orientation is fusion, not in the Spyro Gyra sense but in the truest meaning of weaving diverse influences from Frank Zappa to Paul Hindemith to Led Zeppelin to John Coltrane into a cohesive, progressive 21st century jazz. In short, his music defies those that seek solace in the orthodox while rewarding the curious with something that continues to sound fresh and new no matter how often played. 

He was raised in Chile, New York City and Spain, and makes his home in the San Francisco Bay Area (US).
