JADALAREIGN! Even if tonight’s guest didn’t style her professional name with the “shift” button, we would still be shouting it from the typographic rooftops. Here’s an artist frequently spotlighted for her sophisticated-yet-improvisatory style; her depth of musical knowledge, especially regarding sounds of the Black diasporic dance floor; and (to turn her own phrase back on her) impeccable curation of both her own sets and the bills she assembles for Brooklyn electronic institution Nowadays.

Judging by this week’s conversation, Jada would much rather lift up the creators who inspire her, and whose work comprises her (yes) impeccably curated Groove Trackers mix. This honor roll includes tracks inspired by the jazz, funk and soul of her youth, as well as names familiar to anyone who has followed American (i.e. largely Black) electronic music from the back yards of Chicago, to the warehouses of Detroit, to the fields of the Greater Midwest — and on to New York, Europe and beyond.

But Jada’s sound-world is ultimately borderless: “I’m very free jazz with all my creative pursuits. Anything goes you know? Just ultimate freedom is how I like to dress, how I like to play my sets, how I like to live my life, really.” The dance music arc is long, but it bends towards freedom, and JADALAREIGN is definitely ahead of the curve.
