Rev. Joan VanBecelaere is the Executive Director of UU Justice Ohio.  This past election season, she also directed Ohio UU the Vote and was Chair of the Registration Team of the Nonpartisan Ohio Voter Outreach Committee (NOVOC). Before working for UUJO, she worked as UUA staff and was vice president for student services at Iliff School of Theology, Denver CO.  She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her spouse, Jerry, and 4 felines all named after Hebrew Bible prophets and royalty.

Kristen Beireis is the Community Organizer at UU Justice Ohio. Last election season she organized 26 congregations to participate in Ohio UU The Vote and helped activists acclimate to the digital version of voter advocacy. Kristen has worked as Program Coordinator in school based non-profit programs and has a long history in online marketing. She volunteers as a Hike Leader in local Metro Parks, sings in choirs and musical theater, leads a Facebook group of almost 1000 activists and has been organizing since 2016. Kristen and her Husband live in the Dayton, Ohio area with their feline friend, Hobbes.

No one Wants their Rights taken away. State lawmakers are busy stripping away community, municipality and county rights by writing and passing State Preemption Laws. Ohio is one of 43 Home Rule states, and the People of Ohio refuse to surrender their hard won right for Local Self Governance.

Carolyn Harding speaks with Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund Director Tish O'Dell, who works with communities across the country who are pushing back against state preemption laws.

Carolyn Harding sharing this Sprouts episode from one of GrassRoot Ohio shows featuring Tish O’Dell on State Preemption Laws and Nature’s Rights.  It was an honor to work with Pacifica Radio to bring this to you.
Tish has been a Community Organizer for CELDF (Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund) since 2012 assisting residents to organize rights based initiatives in their communities in order to help them “make real” the just and sustainable communities they envision for the future. CELDF has assisted hundreds of communities across the country to develop “first in the nation” laws banning fracking, factory farming, sludging, water privatization, industrial scale energy development, and others addressing worker’s rights, homeless rights, immigrant rights, fair election issues and nature’s rights, including the first in the nation law recognizing the rights of a specific ecosystem, the Lake Erie Bill of Rights in 2019. 
Tish is a founding board member of the Ohio Community Rights Network (OHCRN), organizing and assisting county chapters to build a movement of community rights organizing throughout the state to culminate in constitutional change that will guarantee people’s rights to local self-governance and the rights of people and nature over corporations.
Tish co-founded the grass-roots organization MADION, Inc (Mothers Against Drilling In Our Neighborhoods) in her hometown of Broadview Heights, Ohio that successfully campaigned to adopt the first Home Rule Charter amendment in Ohio creating a Community Bill of Rights banning new gas drilling, fracking and injection wells in 2012.  Tish has also been featured in the documentary We the People 2.0, appeared on the Thom Hartmann Show and The Daily show and is one of the editors of the 2021 book, Death by Democracy:  Protecting Water and Life - Frontline stories from Ohioans fighting corporate and state power.

Before becoming Mayor of her hometown of Viroqua, Wisconsin in 2018, Karen Mischel spent 17 years in the Merchant Marines followed by her current occupation as an organic farm inspector.

Mischel shares:

- Lessons learned in communication from working on the ship;
- The challenges of managing a rural community with new and old residents;
- Why hard conversations are important and non-violent communication is the key in her community;
- Her work on banning herbicide spraying on public places in Viroqua and on leased public agricultural land;
- Her focus on prioritizing clean water, healthy soil, organic farming, and community health;
- Why educating people in the community should be a political responsibility.

OPAL's Mission Vote 2020 Vision campaign is focused on defeating Trump in Ohio in 2020 and flipping two additional Ohio Supreme Court seats to ensure fair redistricting.

America’s Radioactive Secret- Justin Nobel

Who are these intrepid commuters?  Rain, Snow, Heat, Dark & Traffic?  They aren’t deterred.  We’ll talk with several committed Ohioan bike commuters and find out some of the secrets, tricks, inspiration & gear needed for this hard core commitment.

Carolyn Harding (host) with four Central Ohio Bike Commuters, Karyn Deibel, Steve Palm-Hauser, Jerry Ulibarri and Catherine Girves.   Not only on sunny, mild winter days, like we’ve been having this week, but on icy, wet, miserable, or hot, humid, bad air days and even nights, these folks face the elements, the traffic, the aches and pains to bike  instead of drive.  They inspire me….. 

Karyn Deibel is a certified Senior Trager Practitioner, an active member of Simply Living and Compassionate Communication of Central Ohio, An INELDA trained End of Life Death Doula, and an activist with Columbus Community Bill of Rights.   Karyn is a lover of the earth who actively pursues ways to lighten her carbon foot print and to raise awareness that we and the earth are one.  

Steve Palm-Hauser is a technical writer and a free-lance journalist with the Columbus Free Press. “Besides protecting the environment and getting physical exercise, biking also boosts serotonin levels, which is good for my mental and emotional well-being”.  He is a member of Socialist Alternative. 

Jerry Ulibarri is a Mural Artist & Design business owner.  His company, Kobolt Studios, located in Franklinton, started as a small art shop providing hand-painted murals and custom faux finishes.  Now it’s grown and expanded into all aspects of the design world.  He’s the father of four boys/young men and he bikes to and from work every day. 

As a kid, Catherine Girves rode a bike for fun with friends, and to get places. Once she turned 15 ½, and got a drivers permit, she didn't ride til she was nearly 40.  And then, she needed a bike for transportation, for economic reasons. She’s been a year round bike commuter for 15 years now. She’s the Executive Director of Yay Bikes!, a non-profit organization helping people lawfully and joyfully get from one place to another by bicycle. The staff and volunteers of Yay Bikes! engage thousands of people annually, teaching folks to ride roads, and advocate for people who ride their bikes for transportation.

Carolyn Harding, host, with Morgan Harper, Micah Mitchell and Kwesi Low, organizers for the new grassroots organization, Columbus Stand Up! What are they doing to help get out the Vote!
Morgan Harper is the founder of the new grassroots organization, Columbus Stand Up!, and, most recently, was a grassroots candidate to represent Ohio's Third Congressional District. Previously, she was a Vice President at Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the nation's largest community development financial institution. Morgan also worked at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as a Senior Advisor to the first Director.
Micah Mitchell is a graduate student at The Ohio State University studying social work and public administration. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. Micah is passionate about activism, advocacy, and direct service. He aspires to work in policy reform divesting from the prison industrial complex and investing in community care.
Kwesi is a Columbus native and long time advocate for social justice in his city. He is the former Ohio director for the League of Young Voters and most recently served as campaign staff for Morgan Harper for Congress. He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Ohio State. Kwesi continues to fight for justice as he seeks to connect the Columbus movement to a larger national narrative.
