Lanka Dahan (Burning of Lanka)

Dr. Mihir Arjunwadkar talks about Centre for Modeling and Simulation, Pune which is part of Savitribai Phule Pune University. He elaborates on the vision, the infrastructure, courses offered and the research work being carried out at CMS.

In the fast-changing modern world, mathematical modeling and computer simulation (M&S) have emerged as a discipline that is absolutely vital not only for conventional sciences and engineering, but also for inter-/multi-disciplinary enterprises involving humanities and social sciences, governance and policy making, etc. In fact, it is practically impossible for a modern day multi-disciplinary enterprise to progress without the aid of mathematical modeling and computing.

The Centre for Modeling & Simulation (CMS), SP Pune University (SPPU), was established in 2003 with a vision to promote awareness about M&S; encourage and practice multidisciplinary problem-centric approaches to basic and applied research that transcend traditional boundaries separating knowledge domains; and nurture and maintain fundamental methodological and technological expertise related to M&S, including applied mathematics, applied statistics, computing, computing technologies, and mathematical modeling.

True to the experientially vindicated vision of cutting across knowledge domains, the Centre designed and deployed (2008) a highly multi-disciplinary rigorous academic programme called the MTech Programme in Modeling & Simulation. The programme, right at its inception, anticipated emerging fields such as computational fluid dynamics, machine learning, analytics, and data science, and has been preparing students to take up careers in these fields. The academic environment at the Centre is conscientiously student-friendly and academics-centric so as to promote and facilitate true learning and the development of fundamental qualities of the mind that give a student an edge in the competitive world outside.

Currently, the Centre possesses expertise in areas of machine learning, data-intensive and statistical science (computational archaeology, astrostatistics, network science), computational materials modeling and physics, scientific and numerical computing, computational fluid dynamics, industrial and applied Mathematics, and digital signal+image processing.

Description: Before entering into the war with Ravana Lord Ram worshiped Devi Durga to ensure his victory. For this he needed 108 blue lotuses. He gathered the same but when he counted them it came out to be 107 which was a part of the test from Devi Durga to judge his devotion . Lord Ram did not hesitate to donate his eyes in place of the lotus as he was also known as Kamalnayan (Lotus Eyed). Devi Durga was pleased and blessed Lord Ram with the boon of victory.

Hi, greetings to all!

My name is Adhrit Arora and I will be five years old on 10th August next week. I live in New Delhi.

I have been doodling, Drawing and painting since I was 18 months old. I like to doodle on my easel with coloured markers, Colourful chalks and I prefer brush pens, Oil Pastels, Gel and Block Crayons, Wax Crayons, felt tip sketch pens, colour pencils and watercolours. Water colours are so nice and love mixing colours and making new shades. The painting that I have submitted is a wet-on-wet watercolour painting and the theme is “Autumn the season of change”. Autumn or fall is categorised by the fall of leaves and beautiful red, orange, brown, pink, magenta, fuchsia, yellow, beige, tan, dark brown and mixed shades of warm colours. Autumn is marked by the fall of leaves. This beautiful sight of leaves falling on ground leaves me mesmerized.

"Hello all. This is DARSHAN from Chromepet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I'm studying in class 7 in St Marks Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chromepet, Chennai. From my childhood I was interested in drawing. For the past 2 years, I've been attending drawing classes conducted by Subra Fine Arts in Chromepet. I like to draw all important themes like portraits, landscapes, animals, birds, and other such creative drawings. I mostly use A3 drawing notebooks for my drawing and use mediums like Colour Pencils, Plastic Crayons,Pastel Colours, Acrylic paints, Watercolours, Gel Pens,Brush Pens..

The Kathakali artwork of mine was shortlisted by Khula Aasmaan for the Art contest April To June 2022. I drew this work using soft pastels and A3 Drawing sheets. I completed this Kathakali Art work within 2 days. It was drawn during my online drawing class. This work was much praised by my friends, teachers and family members. I personally love this work as this is one of the best pastel works of mine,which gave me recognition from Khula Aasmaan too.

I also participated in many drawing competitions and won prizes and certificates. I once again thank Team Khula Aasmaan for a wonderful opportunity to participate in this contest and shortlisting my artwork. I'm looking forward to more such events from the Team!

Chai is the bonding between the poor and the people of higher echelon of society. When one visits a 'chai tapri', they can see all types of people sharing their morning thoughts with friends and in the evening share stressed thoughts with friends on a cutting. 
Chai has become a very crucial part of the culture and lifestyle here in Mumbai and I'm sure in many places across the nation fuels up with a cutting."
