Soul Of Brazil by Iron Horse

This is the tune that Shirley Collins wrote for the song Prety Saro on the album Folk Roots, New Roots, that she made with Davey Graham. It is a variant of the Irish tune She Moves Through the Fair.
Graham gives the tune a North African feel, but here I am playing with my new toy, the Ravish Sitar pedal so it has an Indian feel.

High Barbaree, the piano accompaniment is from Sharp’s One Hundred English Folksongs and the words are the ones cobbled together by Peter Bellamy, which he describes as “A hybrid of Bob Robert’s East Anglian version and a Carolina variant collected by the late Frank Warner”. I think these arrangements by the early collectors have been largely ignored by the revival and deserve performing more frequently.  

High Barbaree

Strawberry Fair, the arrangement by H. Fleetwood Sheppard published in Baring Gould’s Songs of the West. Collected From James Masters of Bradstone in the 1880s. Baring Gould claims that most singers in the area of West Devon and East Cornwell knew this song but he only collected it once. There is some doubt as to what exactly Mr Masters sang. Baring Gould’s notebook records three line verses with no refrain and, both he and Fleetwood Sheppard frequently rewrote some of the songs. These are the original words not the ones published in SotW which were retained in the collecting notebook. It has a “lock and key” motif as a sexual metaphor which is very old dating back to Charles the First. Piano Plaid by Rick Benbow.
