Essay About Vera Brittain

This sound effect is produced on the cello by using very high harmonics as the cellist slides her fingers along the fingerboard. It's often called the seagull effect but it also sounds a little like the whiz of artillery shells in the air. In WWI, the British called called artillery fire whiz-bangs or Whistling Willies. The music I've written recalls sandy beaches too (where seagulls are naturally found hovering above) so this effect has a kind of dual purpose in my music. I hope you like it!

Seagull Sound Effect - Used in Between the Sandhills and the Sea

“Perhaps” by Vera Brittain, read by Sonya Cassidy

This is a recording I pulled from my archives that was tracked at SUNY UB in the very early 1990's. The exact date is unknown.  The audio engineer here is the late, great Stephen Bradley. This was recorded on tape. There are no photos from this session and few from the era that I have easy access to. (The photo here is from much later.) This performance was one take. No rehearsal. No edits. No preplanning. We just, well, started playing and the tape was rolling. This was (I think) the last piece we recorded at this session. The other pieces we recorded are now long lost charts I wrote at the time. I was about 19 or 20 when this was recorded.
