[SELF003] Chromatic Stimulations

2021 has been something of a banner year for Central Processing Unit. Less than a decade on from its first release, the Sheffield imprint brought up a century of catalogue items earlier in 2021 with Cygnus’ fittingly-titled ‘100% Dope’ EP. 

Reaching such a milestone would cause many to pause and reflect on their achievements. However, as well as taking stock, CPU has continued to drop new music at an impressive clip - Blackploid, Silicon Scally and London Modular Alliance are just a few of the cult favourites to issue new material via CPU in the past twelve months.

With FASME & Maelstrom’s Lotus 48 EP, CPU round out 2021 with yet another cracking electro collection. For the latter, this is par for the course - Maelstrom’s catalogue stretches back to the 1990s, and the one born Joan-Mael Péneau has already delivered two fine records on CPU in the past. However, Lotus 48 represents another line in the sand on account of it being Fasme’s label debut.

No matter who is at the controls, Lotus 48 carries itself with a panache which signifies that Fasme & Maelstrom are both in their element here. Many of the tracks are anchored by the sort of snapping machine-funk grooves which have become something of a calling card for CPU down the years. 

That said, as well as club-ready rhythm work, Fasme & Maelstrom also deliver some gorgeous synth textures which evoke the golden age of Boards of Canada and AFX. A-sides ‘Almond Blossom’ and ‘Ciliae’ both follow this formula fabulously well. The bass and drum programming will delight those who have enjoyed recent CPU drops from Cygnus, Silicon Scally et al, while technotronic synth pads open up hidden depths.

The title-track kicks off Lotus 48’s B-side with another sleek, slick beat. After introducing gurgling basslines and ghostly tinklings of synth, ‘Lotus 48’ soon locks into a slamming breakneck groove which is sure to send the dance into raptures. It’s an energy which carries through to closer ‘Moneres’, a joint which contrasts booming drum programming with chordal washes taken straight out of the dub-techno playbook.

Friedrich Ernst - The Wildstyle Fusion / SELF002

The second strike of Leipzig’s new electro offshoot sets Friedrich Ernst on the offensive. With these four new tracks he progressed his sound signature from a playful but reflected 8bit world soundtrack on SELF001 to a firm and gritty b-boy attitude. With SELF002 the do-it-yourself label team of DJ Unisex and Friedrich Ernst back up nothing less than their label mission: "We believe in the human mind as a self-learning system" – and it has the basement dance in the eye.

Classic electro otakus will parté about the succinct elements that fits each other seamlessly on Class Beat while the groove remains alert and phantasmagoric.

Back 2 The Ol_ Skool invites two breakdance crews to battle out who owns the floor: the pale electro robot boys on the left and the hoover sound loving UK hardcore girls on the right.

Wildstyle is the living proof that a tight 808 groove still smashes especially hard when complimented with a proper breakbeat. Best played loud and from vinyl.

The last bit of the whole enchilada is almost tranquilizing until you realise how far your stone rolled already. Rhythm Control is a crowd pleaser with endless qualities.

Collaboration partner Dominik Widmann delivers the stunning artwork for their ongoing conceptual series with his acrylic paintings. Included as A2 inlay print in every record.

Barcelona-based DJ and producer, Tomas Estrany AKA Thissperso was born and raised in the western part of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.

he is part of this new generation of talented Argentinian producers such as Dj Frankie or DJ これからの緊急災害 among others. Thus creating their musical universe in their district "63" which is so dear to them and through their style of music, the representation of the city and its places is thus manifested.

Tomas is first and foremost a music enthusiast, he has played in various bands as a guitarist, bassist and singer.
He has the distinction of being self-taught and has no musical barriers, his music is of very high quality.
It reflects his life, sometimes soft and melodic sometimes hard and violent with an intense and addictive energy.

"Friedrich Ernst, born and raised in Dresden, Germany, received extensive musical education through the vibrant music scene there. He began to overcome the gamer boy era with a passion for electronic music and synth toys back in 2017. After exploring the first hardware machines, he started producing and releasing music while slowly learning the treasures of vinyl records and mixing. A new chapter began with his move to Leipzig, where he met DJ Unisex from Dessau in 2020. They share the same vision of timeless electro music and a remarkable old-school style. Drawing from Friedrich's experience, they established the "Self Learning System" label to release music and host events. Since then, attention has been increasing, and Friedrich has refined his signature style by absorbing the vibe of modern electro and breakbeat essentials. As the label owner, he delves deep into the electronic world, connecting dots internationally among artists and labels. Gradually moving away from being a DJ, he is currently focusing on productions and live performances. In the past he left his musical footprint in some local institutions like Institut fuer Zukunft or objektkleina. He released tracks on labels like F.T.P., Defrostatica, Dalmata Daniel, Mind Controlled Rectifier, Earful of Wax and more.
