this is the Catholic version of yemayá based on the Yoruba spiritually , she can be seen as black mermaid/mother figure protector of the sea. She looked over kidnapped Africans crossing/ during the trans Atlantic slave trade. 

Water - diaspora, migration, colonization, resistance, life, death, protection, exploitation! 

Red for the blood of our ancestors &. working-class people! 

see these saints as a reflection of Black and Brown poor working-class material conditions!
