In 1968 the University of Queensland Press published its first books of poetry – Roger McDonald’s Citizens of Mist and the anthology New Impulses in Australian Poetry. Within two years – at the suggestion of UQ alumnus David Malouf – the Press began its landmark Paperback Poets series. A fiction list, and an Asian and Pacific Writing series, soon followed. This lecture will explore the cultural context, campus dynamics and visionary individuals behind an unlikely literary revolution that began half a century ago at St Lucia.

Craig Munro is an award-winning biographer and the author of Wild Man of Letters, Under Cover, and Literary Lion Tamers. He edited UQP: The Writer’s Press and co-edited Paper Empires: a history of the book in Australia 1946–2005. Craig was UQP fiction editor from 1973 to 1980, and publishing manager from 1983 to 2000.

About the event:

Professor Catharine Lumby explores the ethics of biography and the challenges of researching an extensive archive that contains sensitive material about the private lives of others who were part of author Frank Moorhouse’s life. She will also look at the legacy of Frank Moorhouse as a writer and public intellectual.

About the speaker:

Catharine Lumby is a Professor of Media at the University of Sydney where she was founding Chair of the Media and Communications Department. Prior to entering academia, she worked for two decades as a print and TV journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald, the ABC, and The Bulletin magazine. She has written and co-authored ten books and numerous book chapters and journal articles and recently completed a biography of Frank Moorhouse drawing on the Frank Moorhouse Papers housed in the Fryer Library.

2022 Fryer Lecture in Australian Literature: In the Moorhouse Archives

When the first world war ended, the University of Queensland was less than a decade old. The students who attended the University in the immediate post-war years were an extraordinary cohort. A mixture of returned soldiers and young men and women reaching maturity, four from St John's College were Rhodes scholars while others made their mark in publishing, literature, science, anthropology, journalism, engineering and economics. This talk will provide an overview of this remarkable group and then focus on three who made their mark, separately and together, in literature and publishing: Eric Partridge, Jack Lindsay and P. R. Stephensen.

Novelist Nicholas Jose pays tribute to David Malouf’s contribution to Australian letters through his beautiful and evocative works and then joins David in conversation. 2024 Fryer Lecture in Australian Literature

In this presentation, architects Kim and Monique Baber of Baber Studio speak about the influence of Gaston Bachelard’s famous work The Poetics of Space and other literary sources, including David Malouf's 12 Edmondstone Street, on their architectural practice. Baber Studio has been commissioned to transform part of the Fryer Library into an object-based teaching space. Hear Kim and Monique discuss their design philosophy and learn about this new project and how you can be involved.

Poetics of Space: The influence of literary works on architectural design

In this episode we talk with University Librarian Caroline Williams about how researchers can make the most of innovative research support from the Library. Caroline also shares some of her own experience as a researcher and PhD student.  Rounding out the show, we look at emerging trends and how the Library can support the researcher of the future.

Ep 1 The Library does that? Featuring University Librarian Caroline Williams

The 2020 Fryer Lecture in Australian Literature marks the centenary of the birth of the great Aboriginal poet, activist, and educator, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (1920-1993). 

Acclaimed writer Alexis Wright shares her personal reflections on the difficult time for Aboriginal people in which Oodgeroo lived and worked, a period that Alexis' mother lived through in far North West Queensland. 

The lecture will discuss Oodgeroo's influence on Alexis, and others who shaped her artistic vision from the Aboriginal world and beyond. In considering the question, In times like these, what would Oodgeroo do? Alexis will consider the guidance that she herself would offer future writers - in times like these.

About the speaker

Alexis Wright is a member of the Waanyi nation of the southern highlands of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The author of the prize-winning novels Carpentaria and The Swan Book, Wright has published three works of non-fiction: Take Power, an oral history of the Central Land Council; Grog War, a study of alcohol abuse in the Northern Territory; and Tracker, an award-winning collective memoir of Aboriginal leader, Tracker Tilmouth.

Her books have been published widely overseas, including in China, the US, UK, Italy, France, and Poland. She holds the position of Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne. Her debut novel Plains of Promise was published by UQP.

Wright is the only author to win both the Miles Franklin Award (in 2007 for Carpentaria) and the Stella Prize (in 2018 for Tracker).
