This is an analog recording of a long-time favorite folk song, one that dates back to the 1700s but became popular in the U.S., England , and Ireland in the first half of the 19th century in the days of the great whaling fleets. Four tracks recorded sequentially in one take each on a Korg 8-track tape recorder - which is why I couldn't go back in and fix the mistakes in tempo and pitch. Arrangement derived from The Weavers and TheoBikel/Judy Collins.

Greenland Whale Fisheries

A traditional song dating back to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century textile mills of Scotland, which were mainly around Glasgow and as in the lyric here, Calton. Even the 60-hour work weeks and miserable wages couldn't dim the pride in craftsmanship that the weavers express here. Arrangement is based on that of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem from their very first homemade record album from 1958.

A short tribute from a Los Angeles radio show on 3/18/17 in memory of Oscar Brand (1920-2016), a legendary and enormously influential Canadian folksinger who recorded more than 100 albums of music and broadcast a weekly folk show out of New York City from 1945 to 2016. This clip features a short retrospective on Oscar's career and three of his songs.
