Music for 10 instruments

This music was suggested by the Palestinian folksong "My Olive Tree." I have not attempted an authentic rendition but have extracted those elements  - melodic, rhythmic and harmonic - that were useful to me. The use of material from a Palestinian folksong requires no further explanation in the current climate; this composition stands as a threnody for Gaza, intended as a humanitarian response whilst making both a plea for peace and a demand for justice.

Composed August-September 2024 for solo 'cello and chamber orchestra in 3 movements, the piece is associated in my mind with the art of the 13thC Provencal Troubadours and especially with evocations of The Goddess in all her forms.

Reflections on Aphrodite Venerandum

There are 3 movements but the final movement follows without a break and is in the form of a Chaconne with 9 short variations. The piece describes the influence of the Goddess Aphrodite in human affairs - I imagine a beautiful youth as in Classical times attracting the attention of the unseen powers and falling under their spell -if only temporarily.
