Radio Art by Roberto D'Ugo Jr, inspired by the homonymous visual poem by Marcos Gross. Originally conceived in 1989 as a soundtrack for an artistic installation by students of FAAP Communication College, São Paulo, Brazil.
THE POEM: a typewritten sheet full of numbers " 6 ". In a corner on the right, a solitary number " 9 " eludes the reader. Part of the piece was completed at Radio Cultura FM Studios, in São Paulo, Brazil.
COSMIC SILENCE: speechs fragments circulating in a estereophonic eternal return, just numbers (voices of unsuspecting sound operators).
An encrypted message sent into space.
ARTE POVERA: tape loop voices manipulation; rolls of tapes wandering through 3 ANALOG RECORDERS, reverberations and noise STATIC, shorwaves textures.
Feedbacks and mixing in real time. A melancholic minimalist composition played on toy keyboard CASSIO, recorded in a cassette tape, in the bright acoustics of a tiled bathroom (my old bathroom).

Near the subway station, the encounter with the uncanny. "People we meet on the street... secretly dedicate themselves to operations of Black Magic". Flânerie on Avenida Paulista. “This will never be fixed again!”, says the mother to the young woman ahead. Latent meanings swirl on the sidewalk. The search for what is below or beyond the manifest reality. Repressed energy that emerges in waves, textures. I dissolve in foam, for a moment. Voice: Anna Carl Lucchese.

October, 2020. São Paulo. Three friends in a public park, wearing masks. They talk about life from a safe distance. Shy walkers pass. Children appear. They get on the spinning toy. At a safe distance, they articulate the present. Figure and background. Our anguish exposed to the sun. The pile driver lacks empathy. At night, alone, I listen to what they said: imaginary friends, little magic stones, trips to the Moon and Saturn! "The most dangerous thing in the world? Jump out of a Building. Second, catch the Corona virus." Children of science, they are.

Três amigos no parque da caixa d´água. Máscaras em seus rostos. Conversam sobre a vida a uma distância segura. Se acomodam como podem. Máscaras em seus rostos. A torre de transmissão ao lado. A roda de um ônibus desloca a tampa do bueiro. Crianças aparecem: sobem no gira-gira, engraçada diversão. Figura e fundo. A uma distância segura, articulam o presente. Doce vertigem, engraçada diversão. Nossa angústia exposta ao sol. Gostosa risada. CHILDREN OF SCIENCE | CRIANÇAS DA CIÊNCIA (2021 - IA Unesp)

M.A.R. começou a existir em 2019, como paisagem sonora (live mix) para uma exposição coletiva na galeria do IA Unesp. Numa gota de água salgada, o oceano; num loop, uma jornada interior. Anseio de reencantamentos, fecunda memória. Além de gravações de campo, feitas na praia de Juqueí/SP, trabalho aqui sobre alguns compassos tocados pela pianista Giulia Grabert Baronovscki Leshem: fragmentos da canção "Sereia do Mar", da compositora e pianista baiana Babi de Oliveira (1908-1993). Propulsão delicada (desejo, amor), monotonia sagrada (contemplação, o filho das estrelas); deslocamentos submarinos de uma longa tuba ao revés, pianolas hesitantes avançam. Após a tempestade, o chamado profundo a Iemanjá. M.A.R. nasceu como um diálogo interdisciplinar com o recital de formatura de Giulia Grabert (orientada no IA Unesp pela Prof. Dra. Anna Claudia Aggazzi), e com o espetáculo que a jovem pianista idealizou e dirigiu na ocasião: "A Arte de Navegar”. M.A.R. foi também adaptada para a exposição “Música e Artes em Revisão”, realizada simultaneamente em julho de 2019, na Galeria Alcindo Moreira Filho - IA Unesp, com curadoria do Prof. Dr. Pelópidas Cypriano de Oliveira e Taísa Nogueira.

M.A.R. (2019 - IA Unesp)

Opaque Art. A prototype. This piece is, in a sense, a small study of the most intimate aspects of the domestic soundscape (presented as a daily ritual, including the most elementary physiological needs); on the other hand, it evokes a reverie in the shower, an examination of conscience, motivated by the reading of the Book of the Law, by the English occultist Aleister Crowley. The creative force of words – abrahadabra, "I create as I speak" – and the temporal overlap of other environments and external situations (such as casual listening to a religious program on the radio) establish a dense and opaque sound texture, which disappears when the book is closed .

Arte Opaca. Um protótipo. Esta peça é, em certo sentido, um pequeno estudo dos aspectos mais íntimos da paisagem sonora doméstica (apresentado como um ritual diário, incluindo as necessidades fisiológicas mais elementares); por outro lado, evoca-se um devaneio ao chuveiro, um exame de consciência, motivado pela leitura do Livro da Lei, do ocultista inglês Aleister Crowley. A força criadora das palavras – abrahadabra, "eu crio enquanto falo" – e a sobreposição temporal de outros ambientes e situações externas (como a escuta casual de um programa religioso no rádio) estabelecem uma densa e opaca textura sonora, que desaparece quando o livro é fechado.

CriptoSonido: Aleph (2019-2020) has a double nature: a sound installation conceived in the scope of the visual arts and a radio art piece, autonomous in its acoustic poieticity. This ritualistic piece explores the sounds of MATRACA (instrument made of a wooden plank with an iron clapper, also know as Church Rattle). Rattles and speech fragments compose the texture of this sensory exploration about the desire to communicate with the ineffable. Hermetic lines: In every human being there is a child who only wants to play, and the most attractive game is Mystery; Do poets have any other religion? Would they still be poets if they conformed to rites and dogmas?; I was looking, I was looking , trying to understand what [...]; Disguise ourselves as flowers that the bees appear. Criada em 2019, para a Jornada de Pesquisa em Arte IA-Unesp, "CriptoSonido: Aleph" é uma experiência sonora de caráter ritualístico, uma exploração de uma ideia paradoxal: comunicar o incomunicável. A peça é construída a partir de locuções gravadas por Anna Carl Lucchese e toques de uma matraca feita pelo autor da peça. Com a exceção de 4 falas enigmáticas, Anna, expressa-se em linguagem inarticulada, explicitamente desnaturalizada, criada pela edição e repetição de fonemas, respirações, risos e espasmos; fragmentação irregular e imprecisa de palavras e frases transformadas em “enunciações rítmicas”, ora rivalizando-se, ora a mesclando-se com as batidas da matraca e a agitação cadenciada de pequenos chocalhos.

After an interior dive, contemplation of a sunset to the sound of imaginary ship whistles. The recording of a tuba solo (performed by Thiago Bernardes) transformed into a maritime duo with archetypal resonances. Final excerpt of the piece M.A.R. (2019). Após um mergulho interior, a contemplação de um pôr-do-sol ao som de apitos de navios imaginários. O registro de um solo de tuba (improvisado por Thiago Bernardes) transformado, por meio de processamentos eletrônicos, em um duo marítimo de ressonâncias arquetípicas. Trecho final da peça M.A.R. False tones at sunset (2019 - IA Unesp)

A árvore de Natal na casa do Cristo: uma leitura radiofônica do conto de Fiódor Dostoiévski, 1999 | 2006.

A época do Natal pede algo diferente na programação de uma rádio; e foi assim que surgiu esta peça, feita rapidamente para a Cultura FM de São Paulo, poucos dias antes do Natal de 1999.

Tempos depois, em 2006, quando publiquei essa adaptação radiofônica como um episódio do podcast Música Discreta, pouco sabia de experiências semelhantes fora do circuito das rádios públicas. Podcasts narrativos, que aproximam o jornalismo das técnicas ficcionais, eram ainda incipientes. Nessa época, escrevi mais ou menos o seguinte:

"Posso dizer que o interesse maior desta peça está numa idéia muito simples, despretensiosa, mas um tanto arriscada: intercalar a narrativa original de Dostoiévski com depoimentos de meninos de rua da Praça da Sé e da Lapa de Baixo, em São Paulo.

Uma fusão intuitiva e experimental de ficção e documentário – algo próximo ao formato radiofônico conhecido como feature."

The Heavenly Christmas Tree : a radiophonic reading of Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story.

The Christmas season calls for something different in radio programming; and that was how this piece came about, made quickly a few days before Christmas 1999, at Cultura FM in São Paulo.

Later, in 2006, when I published this radio adaptation as a podcast, I knew little about similar experiences outside the public radio circuit. Narrative podcasts, which brought journalism closer to fictional techniques, were still in their infancy. At that time, I wrote something like the following:

"I can say that the main interest of this piece lies in a very simple, unpretentious, but somewhat risky idea: interspersing Dostoevsky's original narrative with testimonies from street children in Praça da Sé and the Lapa de Baixo neighborhood in São Paulo.

An intuitive and experimental fusion of fiction and documentary – something close to the radio format known as a feature."

Peça radiofônica criada em 1995 na Cultura FM de São Paulo. O rádio – veículo e também linguagem - é o principal personagem desta produção experimental que aproxima de maneira improvável textos de Marshall McLuhan e Samuel Beckett. A edição, o corte seco, como protagonista. Destaque para depoimentos do radialista Fausto Macedo e do compositor H. J. Koellreutter, além de interpretações brilhantes de Hélio Vaccari e Fernando Uzeda. A introdução está na voz de Regina Porto, grande expoente da radioarte no Brasil, cujo incentivo foi fundamental para a realização desta obra.

THE UNNAMABLE. RADIO PLAY. VERBORRAGY. RADIO AGONY.

Radio play created in 1995 at Cultura FM in São Paulo. Radio – vehicle and also language – is the main character of this experimental production that brings together texts by Marshall McLuhan and Samuel Beckett in an unlikely way. The editing, the dry cut, as the protagonist. Highlights include statements by radio broadcaster Fausto Macedo and composer H. J. Koellreutter, as well as brilliant interpretations by Hélio Vaccari and Fernando Uzeda. The introduction is in the voice of Regina Porto, a great exponent of radio art in Brazil, whose encouragement was fundamental for the realization of this work.

Mr. Laurentino is a street musician who performs at night, with his harmonica, on a sidewalk on Avenida Paulista, São Paulo. Asked how passersby react to his work, he replied that when people listen to music “they are moved”. In this piece, the phrase “fica comovido” is subjected to few electroacoustic processing: slowdown, EQ, granular delay and exhaustive repetition. The irregularity of the loops, the result of sudden improvisation gestures, results in an approximation with the technical precariousness of Sillon Fermé. Cuts and overlaps animate “resulting motifs”. At the end, the author thanks the musician before leaving.

O Sr. Laurentino é um músico de rua que se apresenta à noite, com sua gaita, em uma calçada da Avenida Paulista, São Paulo. Perguntado sobre como os transeuntes reagem ao seu trabalho, ele disse que quando alguém ouve música “fica comovido". Nesta peça, a frase “fica comovido” é submetida a poucos processamentos eletroacústicos: slowdown, EQ, delay granular e repetição exaustiva. A irregularidade dos loops, fruto de gestos súbitos de improvisação, resulta numa aproximação com a precariedade técnica de Sillon Fermé. Cortes e sobreposições animam “motivos resultantes”. No final, o autor agradece ao músico antes de sair.
São 45 minutos derivados de uma simples frase, dita pelo gaitista Laurentino, como quem se desculpa de algo. "Fica comovido" é a última peça criada em minha pesquisa de doutoramento no IA Unesp. Espero que o Sr. Laurentino esteja bem. "Obrigado, seu Laurentino! Um abraço, até mais! Sucesso aí!"

Fica Comovido_Si Commouve (2021_IA UNESP)

Xibolete | Shibboleth is a miniature about social and linguistic prejudice. A Shibboleth is a password. The term apears in the biblical Book of Judges. It refers to some features of pronunciation that makes it possible to identify an ethnic or cultural group. Nowadays the word Shibboleth has been used to characterize situations of racial discrimination and xenophobia. Northeastern migrants living in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil experience prejudice because of their accent. A trio of northeastern musicians, recorded on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo, gives the password, proudly embodying the immemorial soundmark of survivors. Voice: Tatiana Ferraz.
