the Path To Knowledge

Done around 1980, recorded in the front room, the music all recorded to two tracks on a Fostex 4 track cassette deck, which I still have. The drums were in the downstairs bathroom, behind the front room, surrounded by microphones. The vocals were added later but are only rough. Never got round to recording them properly; when I find the original music I will record them properly. The tape this recording is taken from is damaged, so it is cutting out, but I do still have the original Fostex recording.

The band was called TALKING ABOUT LIFE, Mark Harrington and I shared lead vocals, and I played keyboard; if we had been based in Manchester rather than a nothing town like Crewe, it would have been a different story, we might well have broken through, instead, the band disintegrated, although Mark, myself and Steve Lomas continued to do stuff together.

Steve wanted me in a later band of his called Sensibility, because he wanted to bring in more variation, but the lead in the band didn't--that band didn't last long either--a pity, it had real potential, but stuck the same style, which wasn't at all good for Steve, a brilliant guitarist playing in a limited style that, in truth, wasn't him, was beneath him, tantamount to putting handcuffs on him.

Tragic that Steve died at such a young age, and I was told Mark committed suicide, but I still haven't been able to confirm that--I continue to pray the information was wrong, but have a feeling it was true. If Steve was still living today that's who I would be in a band with. And what a pity the drummer quit drumming, which is the main reason why the band came to an end!
