They say every band has one song that was never written... it just appeared.
For Mesa Babe, that song was “Decay.”

The legend traces back to Pripyat, Ukraine, 1986. the night of the Chernobyl meltdown.
A small touring act was supposed to perform at a workers’ club near Reactor No. 4 that weekend.
They never made it to the stage. But a demo tape surfaced months later, melted and warped from radiation, labeled only: “Decay – Live.”

The tape was untraceable, the band’s name didn’t match any registry.
The instruments sounded wrong, like the strings were made of static. Vocals bled into Geiger clicks. But underneath the noise, there was rhythm... breathing, pulsing, like something trying to claw its way out of the recording itself.

Fast forward decades later, Mesa Babe found fragments of that same demo in a lost Soviet archive that Addison uncovered while researching her forgotten past. The file wasn’t supposed to exist; metadata claimed it was last accessed “before recorded time.” When Abigail and Alice played it through their mastering rig, all the lights dimmed, and the system crashed.

When they restarted it, the waveform had changed.
The track had grown.

That’s what “Decay” is about the slow infection of time, the beauty of collapse, and the terror of things that refuse to die.
It’s not about death; it’s about transformation... rot as rebirth.

Lyrically, it’s Mesa Babe’s confrontation with immortality, the cost of creation that outlives its creator.
Every time the band performs “Decay,” the visuals glitch with images that weren’t programmed: faint outlines of faces, warped Cyrillic letters, reactor readouts.
Alice swears that one of those faces looks like her,  from a lifetime she doesn’t remember.

They say “Decay” isn’t just a song. it’s a signal...
A remnant of whatever energy escaped Chernobyl that night, now living in digital form, spreading through frequencies.
Every upload corrupts slightly differently, like the track itself is decomposing with each play.

Fans claim if you play “Decay” in reverse at high volume, you can hear a whisper, 
not words, just a breath, like something waking up.
