Damien writes: "This song is an original that I wrote with the intention of understanding how to compose music similar to an influence of mine Tigran Hamasyan. I like the feeling of being within an even metre (4/4) with odd groupings and phrases giving the music rhythmic dissonance. This song has many busy sections with a very balanced contrast of space which is why It has been one of my most enjoyable and rewarding compositions to write and play so far."

Delusional (Damien Dixon)

Aidan writes: "My magnum opus! This song, which only came into existence because of this recital, is my second original that I have written out in full and performed/recorded. There are many nods to my influences, such as Plini, John Petrucci and Steve Vai, but I have also tried to inject my own flair into every part of the song. The main difficulty with this song was recording all of the 26 different tracks and still making it sound balanced, but I believe I pulled it off pretty well. The only other difficult thing was playing the improvised solo over the chord progression I made, as I threw in some chords like the augmented chord that threw me off as I haven’t really practiced soloing over such chords.
Yet again I wrote, recorded and edited all of this, with help from my girlfriend Lana Davey with the harmony guitar part (she’s a singer) and general checking if the song makes sense to an outside listener."

Fanfare (Jonathan Dimond)

“Electric Counterpoint” is a composition by Steve Reich, which was originally divided into three movements, I will be performing the third. Originally recorded by Pat Metheny, the song features eight guitar parts, and two bass parts, often playing simultaneously. This requires a great deal of finesse in dealing with the material, as it is so finely composed and interlocking that small mistakes can become quite disruptive and easily apparent.

Diz Que Fui Por Ai - Brazilian Ensemble

A piece I wrote that was focused more on the writing and composition rather than my playing. I also want to understand compositions I played in my last semester's recital by mimicking the composition style. The Imaginary inspirations could be solely derived from Hadrien Feraud’s composition Maps and from Tigran Hamasyan’s The Court Jester.

The Imaginary (Damien Dixon)

Written in 1977 as a tribute to a jazz club in New York City, “Birdland” was released on Weather Report’s most commercially successful album titled “Heavy Weather”.
Joe Zawinul, the keyboardist who composed this song, adored the “Birdland” jazz club. There he had the opportunity to hear jazz greats such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. He also met his wife there.
However in my performance of this tune, I will be playing a big band version arranged by Michael Sweeney.
