Who has not tried playing or dancing with a hoop? 

It is true that it is a fashion that began to become popular, back in the 50s, although its history dates back to Ancient Greece, there were already metal and wooden rings with which both children and adults exercised and recreated. 

In ancient Greece its use was recommended to lose weight. In the 14th century, hooping was not popular in England and doctors blamed it for hula hooping heart attacks and back dislocations. 

The word "hula" was added in the early 18th century when sailors visiting Hawaii noted the similarity between the movement of the body in the hula dance (danced on the islands) and the wavy movement of the body used to balance the ring (translated as hoop); from there comes the transformation of the Hoop concept to take the name of hula hoop.
