Karmerr's un/intuitive dive into the sub-sonic oceanic abyss is an undeniably moving mix that converges activism and polar soundscapes in an entracing listening journey, saturated with textures of melancholia and deep majestic mammals.

Introducing the sounds of karmerr (a few, at least)

"I practiced ballet for the better part of my life, beginning at 2 years old, and so I have had quite extensive exposure to classical music. dance has always been an important, raw form of expression for me and, naturally, classical music has deep roots in my being because of it. 

my main intention with this mix was to explore that side of my sound interests as it isn’t a frequent feature in what I generally play. a secondary intention was to explore different whale sounds from an incredible album I found, “Polar Sounds” from Cities and Memory. 

not only is this album beautiful, but it touches on the effect of human greed and the need to claim and pillage all parts of the earth. 

whales are beautiful, intelligent, kind, intuitive, and all-around fascinating creatures. they have been known to protect other marine life, and even humans, from predators. they have been honored and worshipped by many ancient civilizations and tribes. 

they are complex communicators, using sonar, or echolocation, to emit frequencies in a myriad of pitches to better understand their environment, while making clicking sounds to communicate with fellow whales. their methods of understanding and communication have a musical quality to them that shows the divine beauty of nature. 

I could go on and on about their wisdom and beauty and symbolism for quite some time, so I’ll rather share this article that sums it up for those interested. 

anyways, the album “Polar Sounds” is “a collaboration between Cities and Memory, the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).

Out of all the senses, sound is the one that travels the furthest in the oceans. Because of this, acoustic methods are becoming a critical tool that scientists are using to better understand the Polar seas and the marine biodiversity within.

When sight is impossible, acoustic data can give us invaluable information on breeding habits, migration patterns and the ways in which anthropogenic noise negatively affects marine environments.

Thus, studying the soundscapes of the seas can tell us a lot about how our oceans are rapidly changing.

Through this project, sound artists and musicians will reimagine these sounds to help provide alternative and new perspectives to our scientific data.

The sound clips chosen for the project were recorded from hydrophones located in the Arctic and Antarctic seas and consist of a mixture of biotic, geophonic and human-made sounds.”*

I collected, curated, and combined these sounds un/intuitively, not thinking too deeply into why a specific sound tickled my senses at the time. 

what came together in the end is not what I expected, was incredibly emotional to create, and explores many of life's themes - at least for me personally.

This mix was completely out of intuition. No set track list, no set vibe. Just me playing music I thoroughly enjoy without any boundaries, allowing the product to be 100% me.

she began her creative and artistic journey as a child with a deep love for dance that went hand-in-hand with a love for music. eventually, she discovered the vibrant electronic music scene and felt a strong pull to become a part of this community.

eclectic tastes, curiosity, and sensuality are what karmerr is composed of. her genre is multifaceted, with a soft spot for sassy vocals, interesting elements, and emotive atmospheres. she enjoys tinkering with a myriad of styles, blending them together to tell a story.

she aims to surprise and move listeners. penetrating their consciousness with sounds that are enigmatic, emotional, and close to her heart. the name “karmerr” is derived from first, the twelve laws of karma, and second, the word “err,” meaning to make a mistake (i.e. how we learn).

the duo, AN\DROID¹⁷, is an extension of @musatuk0 as well as @NPCBFZ that was formed due to their obsession with Raw music and Sub sounds and the idea of always keeping it as authentic as possible, No rerecords! and generally only playing songs they've barely listerned to, just what they recently been listerning to.

This hour represents the third time in history that the pair has washed dishes together and was recorded as a fun, quick, rough idea for a demo but quickly spiralled into an emotional exchange of sounds between aspiring artist.
