Welcome to North Meets South by Helena and Sophia. We're a couple of 21 year olds in our final year at Oxford University where we study Fine Art. We wanted to start this podcast to chat all about our life at uni and everything that comes with it.
For our first season, we'll be covering mental health, sustainability, state schools, interning in New York and art school. We're completely new to this but we hope some of our words resonate with you.

Welcome to North Meets South: An Introduction

In our first ever episode Helena and I give you a quick rundown of our life at uni. We talk about Freshers’ Week, coping with family illnesses (we mention our experiences surrounding cancer so if this is a sensitive topic for you it may be best to give this episode a miss), counselling and establishing a work-life balance. These are just our personal experiences at our particular uni and with the university services they provide. We are aware these aren't the same for everyone, so we’d love to hear about anything you have to add to the conversation too as we know we can’t cover it all just on our own!

Episode 1: Mental Health & Wellbeing at Uni

In this week’s episode, we’re talking about sustainable living. Considering the current climate crisis, it’s more important than ever to enter into the wider conversation about how we can promote a more ethical and environmentally friendly way of living. Helena and I speak about local produce, plant-based diets, going plastic-free, fast fashion and recommend markets in Oxford, documentaries to watch and apps for reduced food.

I forgot to mention - finding a plastic-free conditioner that actually works is hard! The best one I have come across (by a mile!) is by Alter/Native and my favourite deodorant is by Becky Boo or Native (not too expensive and both work really well!)

Episode 2: Sustainability

This episode was recorded a few weeks ago before the spread of Covid-19 to the UK. Since then, we have moved back home and will be trying to get some new content up where possible!
The discussion surrounding schools (in particular our state school backgrounds) started in our first year of uni. Two years later, we are continuing the conversation, sharing our memories of school, the choice to apply to uni and how we try to make the most of the situations we find ourselves in. This week we travel to Helena in North Yorkshire to talk about the topic of 'Belonging with (our very first guest!) her dad Gary. 
Belonging is something that we all face, either positively or negatively, it can be hard to grapple with. Starting from a conversation where Helena talked about sometimes not feeling at home in the North or the South, we decided to break down what it meant to belong and what this word means. From anywhere between geographical borders and religion to family and accents, join Helena and Gary on the sofa with a cuppa and sit in tight!

Helena is from North Yorkshire and Sophia is from South London, hence North Meets South! We are two students from the same university talking about issues that range from the current climate and sustainability to health and mental wellbeing at uni (and plenty more to come).
