Operating out of his Brooklyn studio, Mike Isai is a new name to grace the Meanwhile catalogues as the Australian imprint delivers its 18th release with “Home / 87 North”. A single remix comes from fellow US artist, Forerunners.

A relative newcomer to the Progressive House scene, Mike Isai’s nascent production career has already seen a debut on the Nick Warren led, Hope Recordings, via September 2020’s “Pillars to Butterflies” EP. A March 2021 reworking of Shanil Alox’s “Algorithm” for Droid9 illustrated Isai’s remix capabilities, as the US star now debuts on Meanwhile with his twin-tracker.

Opening proceedings, “Home” is a dark and sultry piece that pulsates hypnotically through its near 9-minute voyage with a panoply of textured layers and white-noise effects. Quickly hitting its stride, a pounding kick is accompanied by an immaculately syncopated synth motif that provides the basis for a counterpoint phrase to sit elegantly on top in glittering repetitive pattern. Reaching a rousing filtered denouement at the mid-point, “Home” drops back into a familiar arrangement as all elements combine to impressive effect in the third movement.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic framework of its partner, “87 North” immediately impresses with its 16th note bassline and seismic kick. Another syncopated synth loop provides an imposing trademark production technique as haunting melodies drift over the mid-range, drenched in reverb and white-noise washes. Coruscating pads add further intrigue as the 7-minute piece evolves, coming fully to the fore in a ‘wall of sound’ breakdown, before the second half picks up the pace again with percussive intensity. The juxtaposition of meandering melodic threads and bassline urgency thus creates an impressively woven dynamism.

Another new artist to grace Meanwhile finds Arizona based Brenden LaBonte creating a potent wave of success with his Forerunners moniker. With over a double century of production credits to his name for some of the finest modern dance imprints, Sudbeat Music, Anjunadeep, and Black Hole have all played host to the US artist’s emotive soundscapes. Reworking “Home”, the Forerunners remix is chock full of the trademark soundscapes that characterise LaBonte’s work, with whispering melodies floating atop a powerful beat and ticking hi-hat groove. A relentless bassline sequence adds weight and poise over the 8-minute offering as subtle variations on Mike Isai’s original make their presence felt. Pausing for breath at a spine-tingling mid-point, cadenced bass groove and subtle melodic prowess hit the heights in the latter stages.

An artist with a diverse and storied relationship with the dance music scene, GMJ & Matter are proud to see Kasper Koman make his label debut with the twin-track "Sinking Sky / Biome". A veteran of more than a century of production credits dating back to a 2008 debut, Kasper Koman has seen his work signed to myriad high-profile labels including the likes of Plattenbank, Anjunadeep and Guy J's Lost & Found. From central Netherlands, Kasper has combined trademark emotion with a powerful and evocative sound that has seen his music supported by such leading tastemakers as Guy Mantzur, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J himself. Now debuting on Meanwhile, the "Sinking Sky" opener is characterised by a driving beat and metronomic hi-hat pattern. A running 16th note bassline pattern enters the fray in the second movement with a fizzing vibrancy provided by resonating and filtered effects. A cast of additional characters add to the overall sonic landscape including a beautifully juxtaposed pad progression. A spine-tingling breakdown provides acetylene-edged emotion via the extended bassline motif, before hitting its stride once more in the latter stages to wondrous effect and no small amount of production talent. "Biome" continues the narrative of raw effects-laden power, while a strong kick lays the foundation for a piercing percussive groove, adding swing to the off-beat. A well-crafted sonic palette supplies a soft chord progression of Kraftwerk-inspired imagination as a meandering array of well-placed effects, white-noise washes and rasping bass notes create a mosaic of sounds. The result is a hypnotic, angular offering that keeps listener interest piqued without a central melody seeing the 6-minute piece fly past in an instant. Noise Generation & David Podhel - Fusion (Original Mix) [Timeless Moment]

Long-time Proton Music friends and guardians of the progressive house galaxy, GMJ & Matter have been at the forefront of underground dance music for over a decade. Now returning to the label with original music for the first time in over 5 years, the Australian duo deliver "Ascending Sun" with remixes from Greek and UK legends.

Since May 2016's twin-track "Superposition" EP, GMJ & Matter have become favourites with the Proton Music faithful. Each responsible for a raft of original and remix productions, their joint collaborations have become a beacon for a modern progressive house sound that has seen the Melbourne-based duo play to sold-out gigs across their Australian homeland as well as Europe and beyond. No better is this success illustrated than a dazzling sell-out showcase of their Meanwhile label and brand at Amsterdam Dance Event 2023. Following on from 2017's "Osmosis" and 2018's "Interscope", GMJ & Matter now return with a track redolent in hallmark production traits as a thumping kick, smoothly cadenced shakers and cavernous bass create the perfect backdrop for a muted arpeggio to evolve hypnotically across "Ascending Sun". Gloriously textured pads and white-noise swirls add to the picture as infinite delays and long reverb tails deliver a sumptuous soundscape. New reverb-soaked melodic phrases appear at a spine-tingling beatless breakdown before the rhythmic and bassline groove drop back into the third movement with silky aplomb.

Simos Tagias is another artist with a long Proton Music history after initial success on Particles dating back to 2014. Centred around 2017's "Airlock" and 2018's "Audacity" EPs, a host of remixes has seen the Greek star showcase a dynamic and powerful signature sound. Returning once more after a 2021 remix of GMJ solo work, "Rise Above", the Simos Tagias remix quickly develops the melodic themes present in "Ascending Sun" and develops them with typical flair. New production material courtesy of vocal-tinged pads and re-imagined melodic motifs flow from a backdrop of body-shaking groove that sees expertly programmed percussive and sub-bassline patterns. Hitting its stride post-breakdown, the Simos Tagias remix explodes into life in the second half with the familiar and mesmerising open-filtered arp so central to the original.

The final artist is another iconic figure within the progressive house scene. Responsible for almost a century of breathtaking production credits dating back almost a decade, Orsen is a familiar name. Firmly ensconced in his adopted Austrian home, the UK-born artist has found himself a sought-after figure with his work for Sudbeat Music, Mango Alley and Cid Inc.'s Replug where he also acts as A&R chief. Dating back to early 2016, 7 remixes chart Orsen's Proton Music path as he returns after November 2023's interpretation of Dimuth K's "The Shaman". Full of dancefloor brio, a chest-thumping kick and shuffling hi-hat pattern lay the foundation for a huge running bassline to dominate the early exchanges before the superbly cadenced arp of the original emerges. Delicious new melodies play their part from with a new bassline variation adding hands-in-the-air emotion at the breakdown. A rousing crescendo sees the Orsen remix drop back into the familiar patterns of earlier phrasing in the second half and melodic touches create intrigue and demand listener attention.

Creating an exquisite new offering, GMJ & Matter rise again to heat up dancefloors from east to west with their "Ascending Sun".
