This new podcast features conversations with artists who have participated in Visual Studies Workshop's Project Space artist-in-residence program. In this episode Hernease Davis talks with artist Granville Carroll about his practice and his experiences during his residency at VSW in September, 2021. The Project Space residency is a studio workspace for artists working in photography, book art, film and other media arts. The residency provides 20 artists per year the opportunity to experiment with new work or new display strategies, and to have discussions with critics, curators, and the community-at-large about works-in-progress.

Granville Carroll is a visual artist and Afrofuturist working with digital technology, poetry, and alternative processes to reshape the world. Granville earned his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2020. He is currently based in Phoenix, AZ.

Hernease Davis is currently the Assistant Curator of Education and Public Programs at Visual Studies Workshop and spends her time between Rochester and Brooklyn, NY.  Hernease earned her MFA from ICP-Bard College and widely exhibits multimedia installations throughout the U.S.

Savannah came to VSW in November 2021 from Baltimore, MD. Savannah and Aaron speak together about their work in the archive and how they met through the archive - specifically, through one important historic image.

In this final episode of season 1, Hernease speaks with artist, Ligia Bouton. Ligia was an artist in residence at VSW in August of 2022. They recorded their conversation in the Project Space towards the very end of Ligia’s residency.

Ligia thoughtfully used the VSW building and archives in her multifaceted approach towards making work that is in response to and in conversation with an important historical figure in the history of astronomy.

Welcome to Season 3 of the Project Space Podcast! Our brand new season starts off with a sequel. Ligia Bouton, who was an artist in residence at VSW in 2022, is back on the podcast for Part 2 of her conversation with Assistant Curator, Hernease Davis.  Ligia's first conversation with Hernease was actually the Season 1 finale. If you haven’t already listened to part 1, the link to that episode is in the show notes.

For that first talk with Ligia, Hernease spoke with Ligia inside her Project Space Studio at the very end of her residency. Bouton has been researching the work of Henrietta Swan Leavitt, who is an important yet overlooked historical figure who made groundbreaking contributions to Astrology. Ligia spoke about how she is using photography, performance, glass, musical composition, and installation as an interdisciplinary approach to translate the extensive research she has done on Henrietta Swan Leavitt. In this episode, Ligia shares about returning to VSW to continue her project, and many exciting developments in her work that involves another residency, a major exhibition in Denmark and a public art project in Boston, Massachusetts.

"The Something Else Press: A History"  Dick Higgins' early art activities were musical in nature. He soon incorporated poetry, film graphics, and performance, and became a central figure in the Fluxus and Happenings movements. Dick established the Something Else Press in 1965 which published artists' books, avant-garde literature, and reprints (most notably, the works of Gertrude Stein). Dick will give an illustrated history of the Something Else Press followed by a brief reading of his own poetry".

Dick Higgins: A History of Something Else Press

Hernease Davis sits down with the artist, Raymond Thompson, Jr. at the end of a very busy season that included a tour that launched his recent book project, entitled, Appalachian Ghosts: A Photographic Reimagining of The Hawks Nest Tunnel Disaster, which caused the death of nearly 800 workers, 2/3 of which were black americans.  Their conversation focuses on an ongoing series that Raymond worked on as a resident at VSW, entitled “It’s hard to stop rebels that time travel”- Both of these projects are very much related to one another in terms of how Raymond is approaching the North American landscape that is both research driven and integrated with speculative and imaginary interventions. Raymond made numerous references to important artist scholars whose works greatly influenced his directions. Season 3 Episode 2 | RaymondThompson Jr.

For this episode, Hernease sits with former resident, Joshua Tonies… twice, due to technical issues with their first audio recording.  Joshua was extremely generous to record for a second time to speak about his residency experience, his layered obsession with house plants and how he uses animation technology to make the intangible, tangible. This episode will be a hybrid combination of the first and second recording. For every interview, Hernease asks each resident to answer the question, “Where are you from?” Joshua’s answer during that first conversation was too wonderful not to include. So please bear with the audio quality for the first 12 minutes of their discussion.

"Stephen Foster is founder of the Dada Archive and Research Center at University of Iowa. Besides his extensive research on Dadaist activity, which includes numerous lectures, articles, and contributions to books, Stephen has participated in a number of video collaborations with Hans Breder. His lecture on Dada publications will cover: 1) the various types of Dadaist publications, 2) the publications of 4 different Dada centers, and 3) the physical incorporation of the publication into the work of various of the Dadaists".

This scene of Lara struggling against the elements in the desert, has the sound of crows cawing and Lara grunting - both sunds taken from the video game. They are mixed with a track I borrowed from a fake ethnographic album by Michael Snow. Snow invented tribal songs in various genres for a record project called The Last LP: Unique Last Recordings of the Music of Ancient Cultures (1987), as an ode to the end of vinyl.

She Puppet: Audio of Lara Croft Attacked by Birds

This is an example of how the  hypnotist, Dave, got people to relax enough into suggestion to talk about specific experiences. He would guide the person to an enormous Library that contained everyone's Book of Life. The Librarian would get your book down and turn the pages of your life for you. Dave had asked the performer, Jackie Smith, to go to the last page of her book, which would ostensibly detail what happens at the End of the World from her perspective. This process of getting to the library and the book would take quite some time and was not used in the video - what we used was what came after getting to the last page.

Ape of Nature: Hypnotist guides Subject with Hypnotic Suggestion

In what might be the defining moment of the film, Martina reads and mis-reads a quote from Lacan. It is a quote that situates the girl child within the patriarchal order and Martina's mis-reading of it turns its' meaning and the restrictions of the patriarchy on end. Super 8 has limitations for editing and in this case, I cut the origial footage, joined to the sync sound on the magnetic stripe. This film is spare and has very few outtakes and no extra sound or B-roll as one would have working with 16mm or video.

Martina's Playhouse: Martina Reciting Lacan Quote

There are several important references to "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in OR119. When Reich saw this film in 1952, he came away with the realization that perhaps he was a space man. The track was composed by Zach Layton and was used as background sound in a couple of scenes.

We wanted a dynamic comintation of death metal and funeral dirge to support Jennifer's reciation of Reich's Last Will and Testament as she is carried across the field to the Orgone energy accumulator towards the end of the video. The composition is by Zach Layton with Bobby Previte on drums.

We had Jennifer do a separate audio session during post production of some phrases that needed clarification in the film. Keith recorded her saying "the dawn" over and over again, perhaps 40 times. Listening to the recording in retrospect, the repititions and small variations of the phrase was definitely obsessive but also a haunting refrain with an odd poetic flare. We selected one take for use in the film.
