This may be the closest thing you are going to get to a ballad from me, although the electronic beats are not really congruent with that.

The verse guitar riff came from the "riff bank" -- it was something I invented during FAWM 2021, but wanted to use for a song rather than an instrumental. No lyrics suggested themselves at the time, so it was shelved. I think my original intent for the riff was to do something very stripped-down and folky. It was not meant to sound like this.

Eighty per cent of the lyrics were written by standing next to the river with a notepad for twenty minutes, and simply writing down things I could see.

Getting this written was a fight. Anything with lyrics always takes much more time, partly because the words have to be written in the first place, but also because of the multiple vocal takes that are always required. Although most of the lyrics came easily, I had to drag myself back to the laptop again and again to scrape together the choruses. Composing the music was a similarly attritional process, as was the production.

I am not entirely happy with this for various reasons. I do not like the beats much -- they were done quickly and I did not take much pride in them. I should have re-recorded some of the guitar parts as well, but I need to finish this tonight and I can't be bothered.

I may warm to it after some time away from it.
