The Assignment: Use the Shepard tone to create a piece of music.


This one was difficult but I had to do it, a few years ago I was asked to create a piece of music for a documentary using Shepard Tones like Christopher Nolan does perfectly on his movies. They had no budget for Hans Zimmer and they called me, ok.
But unlike Zimmer I was incapable to create orchestral textures using Shepard Tone, it never worked and ended up giving up. I did something honourable with plain sine waves but using instruments and orchestral samples I couldn’t get that sensation of “never-ending” rise or fall, I could hear the cycle starting over, etc. Very frustrating.
I got took a rain check on that and kept my unfinished research sessions for later. Yesterday finally this junto prompt decided me to face it and try to do it. I worked 12 hours on this thing, it is still a work in progress but it is getting closer to what I wanted.

I used several Shepard Tones, always ascending, using orchestral samples, sine waves (Ondes Martenot and Reaktor) and added some proper music combined with the Shepard drones (solo cello, orchestral percussion, brass and string's dystopian samples)

The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

Disquiet Junto Project 0524: Sunset Waveform
The Assignment: Read a photo like a graphic score.

It's more an interpretation than a direct implementation. I started with a choir track I used from somewhere else. I mirrored it adding a reverse version of it, because the lakes image mirrored. Originally I wanted to stop here, because I liked the result and it had something from a lake mood. But the waveform was missing, so added the sequence and it's volume tend to follow the trees shapes. I added some pad of different colors at some points which could be interpreted as the yellow areas. One choir track is decently rippled by a phaser …. etc. Bottom line: you may not hear the wave form, but it's there!
