KFWB - October 18, 1933 - Los Angeles Breakfast Club Program

Harold Roberts & His Golden State Hollywood Orchestra.

Roberts lead the USC marching band known as the "world's largest orchestra" during the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and was noted for incorporating jazz and wild stunts into the band's performances.

Beginning my radio career in 1995, I can ask most fellow broadcaster, how many times can you say that you were the engineer for a 1930's band remote?

In the 90's I was lucky enough to be the broadcast / recording engineer for Johnny Crawford's Orchestra when they broadcast live from the Los Angeles County Museum Of Art on KUSC.  I was a mere teenager at the time.  The Executive producer, my recording mentor, and my friend Bill Vestal had faith to let me behind the controls because he knew how passionate I was about this band and the music.  Thank you Bill for believing in me!  One of my favorite moments in my career was this broadcast, in particular

From 1996-1999 Johnny Crawford & His Orchestra play four episodes of Sunday's At Four which aired on KUSC in Los Angeles.  This particular episode is from July 5, 1998.  It's off the board so that means there is no audio processing and make sure you listen for a bonus track AFTER the broadcast finishes.  I kept the tape rolling for an ENCORE performance.  

I'm very happy I got to see this band many times in Los Angeles.  One of the best!  Enjoy!!!

KUSC - Sundays At Four - Johnny Crawford & His Orch  07-05-98 (off Board)

This is a very special aircheck that I acquired off of ebay.  These were lacquer glass discs that were being sold off one by one!!!  Luckily, I saw what the seller was doing and was able to keep the broadcast complete.  

Very Historic indeed!  A real slice of life from Great Britain in 1940.  Here we have Tessie O'Shea, Billie Merrin & His Commanders, Terry Cantor, and Ken Fiddler performing in a Midland Theater one after noon on the BBC October 20, 1940 at 4pm.  

*** About the discs - a very strange lacquer on really thick glass discs.  When I gently tried to clean one the material swelled up immediately and i had to wait until it dried before it would play again.  I decided not to mess around with them any further and immediately transfer the discs.

I am a professional transfer engineer and used a variety of different styli to preserve the most optimal sound.  Although, the discs were a bit beat up, it's a miracle they all survived and were kept together!!!

Nobody has heard this before, so you will be among the first.  Enjoy!!

BBC - Varities From A Midland Theatre - Billy Merrin, Tessie O' Shea 10-20-40  4pm

This track was on a 16" library transcription disc from Associated Cinema Studios in Hollywood.  It Dates to 1935.  The song featured two titles.  Known as "The Martinique" in America and "I'm All In" in Great Britain.

From a 1935 Titan library transcription, we have an unknown San Francisco Orchestra playing a tune not known to me.  Anybody have any ideas?  I'll be posting another in a few days.  Thank you!!!

Radio lost a great one today.  WCBS-FM Doo Wop Shop radio host Don K Reed passed away on Long Island  this afternoon.  - July 16, 2022

It was an honor to be able to work with him at WCBS-FM and enjoy his company at many radio reunion dinners.

This far from does Patty justice on what she has accomplished. since she joined the airwaves in 1978.  From intellectual, thought provoking dialogue and interviews and in-depth historical audio journeys to top-40 talents and beyond, Patty is truly a remarkable talent in the industry. Take from a pile of Marsh lab library radio transcriptions, here are two tracks recorded in Chicago by Dan Russo's Orioles in December 1932 or early January 1933.  These were made months after the bands last commercial recording date.  I was fortunate enough to find several library radio transcription discs that were issued to radio stations only to play for fill music in between programs.  I believe that these belonged to Mr. Russo at one point because names of soloists and vocalists are hand written on the labels and I believe he would have been the only person to know who was playing or singing what in the session.  Also, the names jive with the personnel listed in the discographies.  Enjoy!!!

Need help identifying this dance band.  Here are the clues that we know:

1) From a broadcast from December 1933
2) Came from a bunch of discs of airchecks all recorded in San Francisco
3) The two tunes are "Don't You Remember Me" and "You're Gonna Lose Your Gal"
4) Both tracks are on the same side of the disc but MAY be from a different broadcast
5) Disc was recorded on a cutter that clearly had speed control issues.
