Bryn Lemon Sound Journal #1 BODY

This week, our prompt was CITY. Featured in this sound are birds chirping, automotive noise, and sounds of smoking. The birds heard within this sound represent the life which exists inside cities. They are present throughout the recording, acting as a reminder of the many lives which reside inside cities that make them the bustling social centers we know them to be. The sounds of smoking (lighter flicking, inhale/exhales, burning) represent the pollution issues plaguing cities everywhere. Additionally, the smoking comments on the normative cultural practices of smoking which are so often seen in cities. The automotive sounds heard in this recording are a mixture of cars passing by and an automotive repair shop hard at work. The vehicle is responsible, in part, for the lives and pollution within cities, as it brings people together but simultaneously pollutes their bodies. All identifiable subjects within the recording come together to create a familiar, or even nostalgic soundscape.

The affective experience I created is intended to portray bodily and emotional feelings of anxiety, doubt, guilt, or even feelings associated with PTSD. These sounds are meant to be stomach-turning, upsetting, and anxiety-provoking, with opposing rhythms and tones. This is accomplished by the multiple layers of droning, reverberant, staggered, and purposefully clipping sounds which are present throughout the whole piece, never allowing a moment of rest. The sounds which appear throughout the track are representative of intrusive thoughts or negative self-talk, sometimes repeated in different tones, leading to the overwhelmingly bass-filled ending, and symbolizing the never-ending vicious cycle of these feelings.
