Charles Tien is Professor of Political Science at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. He has served as department chair at Hunter College and was selected to be a Fulbright Scholar in American Politics at Renmin University in Beijing, China. He has taught classes on American politics, women, and minorities in politics, voting and elections, American foreign policy, research methods, and polling. He has published over 30 scholarly articles, most recently in Presidential Studies Quarterly, and International Journal of Forecasting. He received his BA from the University of Michigan, and his PhD. from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Ye Liu is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Development, King’s College London. Her research focuses on the long-term impacts of China’s one-child policy on women’s life chances, family formation and intergenerational relationships. She is currently writing a book manuscript about siblingless urban women from the one-child generation and on how patriarchy still holds those women back during their adult life course transitions to the labor market, marriage, and motherhood. Say It Loud! is a wide-ranging summa of Randall Kennedy’s thought on the realities and imaginaries of race in America. 

The New York Times calls Kennedy "among the most incisive American commentators on race."

Professor Randall Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor of Law at Harvard University. He has written six books: Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity and Adoption; Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word; Race, Crime, and the Law; Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal; The Persistence of the Color Line; and For Discrimination: Race, Affirmative Action, and the Law. 
Kennedy has also published collections of shorter works and his articles can be found in periodicals and newspapers, such as The American Prospect, The Nation, The Atlantic Monthly, Georgetown Law Journal, Harvard BlackLetter Journal, and The Boston Globe. His book Race, Crime, and the Law won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.

Poet Dana Robbins Discusses the Healing Power of Poetry and Reads from After the Parade

The Women’s Power Tool Kit welcomes a conversation with Dána-Ain Davis, a professor at Queens College, about reproductive justice and how today's social movements can intersect for positive change.  Recorded on Thursday, July 9, 2020.

The fight for women's reproductive justice is one issue in which race has had a strong influence for centuries. Black women often face medical maltreatment and discrimination in the U.S. healthcare system.

Racism is present in every part of American society, and in order to work towards effective change, people need to be aware of how racism manifests in different circumstances.

Dána-Ain Davis, a professor at Queens College in New York City, specializes in women’s studies, reproductive justice, Black studies, and more. She has written four books concerning Black welfare, reproductive injustice and Black gender and sexuality. She serves as the editor and is on the boards of multiple anthropology publications and organizations, and has been a member of New York State’s Maternal Mortality Task Force since June of 2018.

Marla Aaron launched her eponymous collection in 2013 when her combined obsessions with bridges, hardware and jewelry could no longer be ignored. The collection is proudly made and finished by hand in New York City and sold all over the world. What began with one lock is now an entire collection designed to be worn in infinite ways and used as “jewel tools” with individuals’ own collections—to redefine the “precious” in jewelry with individuality. Although recognized for its streamlined, industrial look, the collection is deeply rooted in the personal and emotional jewelry of the Victorian and Georgian eras and has expanded to incorporate many other elements. 

The company's rebellious approach to jewelry led to the December 2017 installation of their first jewelry vending machine at the Brooklyn Museum. Marla and her team are in the process of building more machines. 

The entire collection was on exhibit in 2016 in New York City at the Museum of American Finance in their exhibit, "Gold: Worth its Weight". Marla and her team release new designs regularly on Instagram first with no apparent rhyme or reason. The #lockyourmom Project, created by Marla, gives single moms sterling silver Baby Heartlocks just for them. To date Marla and her team have given out hundreds of Heartlocks to deserving single moms all over the country. 

Before launching her collection, Marla spent over 25 years in marketing and advertising. She was not very good at it. Highlights include working on the launch of Cosmopolitan Magazine in Spain, making sure only raisins in small red boxes were stocked in a green room for a pop star in Cannes France and sending British sports cars home with people as part of a direct marketing campaign. Guest speaker: Ming Di is a Chinese poet, born in Wuhan, currently living in California. She studied English literature in China and linguistics in the US and taught Chinese at Boston University before moving to the west coast. She has translated Marianne Moore, e e cummings, Terrance Hayes and many other American poets into Chinese and co-translated many contemporary Chinese poets into English. 

Ming Di has edited several anthologies including New Cathay: Contemporary Chinese Poetry (Tupelo Press, 2013) and New Poetry from China 1917-2017 (Black Square Editions, 2019). She was a co-organizer of international translation workshops and festivals in Beijing from 2011 to 2017 and has been the China editor for Poetry International (Rotterdam) and Lyrikline (Berlin) since 2011. Her poetry has been translated into English (River Merchant's Wife, Marick Press, 2012), Spanish (Luna fracturada, Valparaiso Ediciones, 2014) and French (Histoire de famille, Transignum, 2015). She will present her new poems written in English about her ancestral home in the Three Gorges of Yangtze River, China.

Michelle also knows first-hand what it feels like to struggle with a mental illness after experiencing her own depression due to challenging life events of her own just a few years ago. Michelle recently concluded her 19-year pharmaceutical career and became an entrepreneur. She has emerged from her own challenging life events with a strong desire to positively impact the mental health landscape within the first responder community, the workplace and within local communities.
