Today, we talk about taking a whole-health approach to treating pediatric patients with Santisree “Santi” Tanikella, MD, FAAP, ABIHM, ABOIM, who is board certified in both Pediatrics and Integrative Medicine and currently practices General Pediatrics and Pediatric Integrative Medicine in Pennsylvania.

She graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed her residency training in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Montefiore. She went on to complete fellowship training in Integrative Medicine at the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine.   

Dr. Tanikella’s goal is to find the easiest and least invasive approach to care. “Sometimes pharmaceuticals are necessary, but if a condition can be treated with lifestyle or dietary changes, natural supplements, mindfulness, meditation or aromatherapy, I prefer to try these approaches first,” she says.

She has a strong foundation in meditation, energy healing, and Ayurvedic medicine, and received certification as an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Instructor from the Chopra Center in California. A planner for the Spirituality in Medicine Leadership Training Institute since 2011, she enjoys working with medical students and trainees, and helping them discover joy and purpose in their careers and personal life.

Integrative Pediatrics

Today's guest is Jed Fahey, ScD, a leader in healthspan extension (chemoprotection).  Most of his work has focused on sulforaphane, a compound found most abundantly in cruciferous veggies and particularly in sprouted broccoli seeds.  Dr. Fahey is a nutritional biochemist with broad training and extensive background in plant physiology, human nutrition, phytochemistry and nutritional biochemistry. 

He spent 27 years as a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  Until retiring in mid-2020, he ran the Cullman Chemoprotection Center, which he helped to create, and which has for many years developed plant-based agents for the purpose of preventing chronic disease and enhancing healthspan.  

His research addresses the induction by phytochemicals, of cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant responses in mammalian systems. This work draws on elements of natural product chemistry, enzymology, nutritional epidemiology and clinical research to develop nutritional strategies for chronic disease prevention in humans.

The Healthspan-Cruciferous Vegetable Connection

Reproductive Psychiatry is an emergent specialty within medicine that focuses on women's mental health. Lucy Hutner, MD, an internationally recognized expert in women's mental health, gave a lecture centered around postpartum depression and anxiety that was titled "Skills to Support Women’s Well-being: Effectively Discussing and Assessing Mood Without Judgment" as part of the GW Resiliency & Well-being Center's Women’s Well-being Lecture Series. 

Dr. Hutner is one of a small group of psychiatrists with extensive expertise in reproductive psychiatry, which focuses on the mental health needs of women and families before, during, and after pregnancy. She is the lead editor of the American Psychiatric Association's "Textbook of Women’s Reproductive Mental Health." She has also authored/co-authored over twenty peer-reviewed articles and chapters focusing on reproductive psychiatry and medical education. 

In 2018, Dr. Hutner was invited to be one of the speakers in the inaugural TEDxWesleyan speaker series. In this talk, she discusses the evolution of women's reproductive mental health as a field within medicine. She illustrates her personal and professional experiences as a physician and psychiatrist focused on the well-being of women throughout preconception, pregnancy, and childbirth.

This new lecture series is organized by the center and supported by the Rosemary Bowes, PhD, Women's Mental Health Fund.

The Psychology of Shame, Sentinel Emotional Events, & Health Professionals

Group Medical Visits (GMVs) are a great way for healthcare providers expand their ability to deliver quality care to patients, especially the underserved. Through the use of GMVs, underserved patients can have access to a range of Integrative Health modalities and patient-centered health education in a “high touch” interactive environment. Patients also experience a sense of community and social connections that lead to positive changes in health behavior, physical and mental health, and overall well-being.

Today, we talk to Jeffrey Geller, MD,  a family physician, chief medical officer Kronos Health in Lawrence, Mass., and president of the Integrative Center for Group Medical Visits.  

Dr. Geller is one of the most experienced leaders in the group medical visit movement.   A nationally recognized expert on GMVs, he is particularly well known for his work in creating the largest group visit program in the U.S., and his ideas about empowerment. Integrative Medicine & Group Medical Visits

Today, we talk about the food matrix, ultra-processed food, and preventive nutrition with Anthony Fardet,  PhD, a senior research scientist with the National Institute for Agricultural Research in France and the author of "Stop ultra-processed foods! Let's Eat True!"  His main research interest is the link between the food matrix, food processing, and health potential within the context of sustainability.

A food matrix, as defined by USDA, is "the nutrient and non-nutrient components of foods and their molecular relationships, i.e., chemical bonds, to each other."

Dr. Fardet is a leader in preventive nutrition–a branch of nutrition that consists of producing data to define the best way to nourish oneself in order to live as long as possible in good health.  Preventive nutrition includes both physiological, behavioral, technological, environmental, economic, social, cultural, and religious dimensions.

He is particularly involved in promoting a more holistic view of preventive nutrition to lower diet-related chronic diseases, and to increase what he calls “the healthy life years.” He believes that human nutrition should not be explored via a pharmacological approach because food compounds are not drugs.

What Is the Food Matrix

Today on the pod we have Joshua S. Yamamoto, MD, FAAC, a cardiologist, former cardiology consultant to the attending physician for the U.S. Congress, and co-author of “You Can Prevent a Stroke" with his spouse, Kristin E. Thomas, MD. 

“You Can Prevent a Stroke” focuses on a landmark approach to navigating the natural aging process to prevent the heart and brain from failing.  The book gives us insight into what we need to do, and what we can ask of our doctors, to manage the effects of aging on our circulation so that we do not have a stroke.

Dr. Yamamoto is a D.C. native.  He has a degree in Physics from Princeton University, a medical degree from Dartmouth, and he was trained in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He completed his training in cardiology at the National Naval Medical Center and Georgetown University.  He was the head of cardiology training and supported cardiac needs in the war zone of Kuwait in 2005.  He and his wife are currently in private practice together at Foxhall Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Navigating Aging for a Healthy Heart & Brain

Dr. Levers has a background in athletic performance development at the Division I collegiate level and in the private sector.  He has co-authored several articles published on the impact nutrition and supplementation have on exercise performance and body composition.

Dr. King is a clinician, administrator, and educator with more than 20 years of experience in her field.  She is has a PhD in Translational Health Sciences at GW with a specialization in cognitive neuroscience.  Prior to GW, she developed and continues to oversee the first Art Therapy in Neuroscience and Medicine program at the Indiana University Neuroscience Center.

We talk about nutrition, the human microbiome, and big data with Hannah Holscher, PhD, RD, director of the Nutrition and the Human Microbiome Laboratory, associate professor of Nutrition, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Division of Nutritional Sciences, at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Holscher’s laboratory uses clinical interventions and computational approaches to study the interactions of nutrition, the gastrointestinal microbiome, and health.  In addition to publishing in top nutrition journals, she also actively disseminates research findings in formats ranging from scientific presentations and webinars to podcasts, Twitter chats, blogs, and popular press articles. 

She also has affiliate appointments with the Institute of Genomic Biology, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and the Family Resiliency Center. Her research team aims to enhance human health through dietary modulation of the gastrointestinal microbiome.
 
Her research on nutrition and the microbiome has been recognized by both local and national organizations with several awards, including the 2020 National Academy of Medicine Emerging Leader, and the 2021 American Society for Nutrition’s Mead Johnson Young Investigator Award.  She currently serves on The Journal of Nutrition editorial board and as an associate editor for Nutrition Research and Gut Microbiome.

The Human Microbiome, Health, & Big Data

Today we’re talking about sleep deprivation and glymphatics with Vivek Jain, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at GW and Director of GW Center for Sleep Disorders.  

The glymphatic system is a network of vessels that clear waste from the central nervous system, brain, and spinal cord, mostly during sleep.  Once thought not to exist, this lymphatic system may be disrupted in and contribute to some diseases of the brain.

Dr. Jain is a graduate for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India. He did his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics, Columbia, Missouri.

Dr. Jain’s research on various aspects of sleep disorders has been published in more than dozens or peer-reviewed scholarly journals and numerous books. He lectures nationally and internationally on the topics of obstructive sleep apnea and heart disease.

Sleep Deprivation and Glymphatics

Today, we have with us J.D. Talasek, Director of Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences or CPNAS, which explores the relationships among culture, science, engineering, and medicine.  

J.D. is also the creator and moderator for a monthly salon called DASER (DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous) held at the National Academy of Sciences as part of the LASER network.  He has served on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in the Museum Studies Master’s Program.  And he served on the Contemporary Art and Science Committee (CASC) at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. 

He is the art advisor for Issues in Science and Technology Magazine, and a former board member of Leonardo/ International Society for Art Science and Technology, where he was chair of the LASER committee that coordinated 50+ art/sci salons around the world.

We talk about empathy, chronic conditions, and more with Meghan L Beier, PhD, MA, a Health and Rehabilitation Psychologist at the Rowan Center for Behavioral Medicine in Burbank, Calif, and founder of Find Empathy, an online directory and educational platform that helps connect people with challenging medical conditions to therapists who understand their diagnosis.

Dr. Beier specializes in cognitive rehabilitation, neuropsychological assessment and intervention, and multiple sclerosis. She helps individuals improve memory and emotional symptoms through psychotherapy interventions.

Today on the pod we talk about the gut microbiome and pancreatic health and disease with researcher and clinician Mark Haupt, MD, Chief Medical Officer of IFF Health & Biosciences. What Do Dolphins Have to Do with Anti-aging?

Today on the pod we talk about cancer survivorship with Sanna Ali, MSN, CRNP, an Oncology nurse practitioner (NP), cancer survivorship researcher and advocate, and PhD student at the School of Nursing at George Washington University. She currently practices at the GW Center for Integrative Medicine.

In her role as an NP, she saw first-hand the multifaceted, complex issues that burden cancer survivors. She decided to pursue her PhD to develop the research skills needed for knowledge generation and scientific discovery that will improve the quality of life and outcomes for cancer survivors. She received a Sigma Theta Tau International, Phi Epsilon Chapter Small Grant for 2023-2024 to support her project, “Perspectives and attitudes of oncology professionals related to cancer survivorship: A qualitative case study.” 

NP Ali is the Maryland State Liaison for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) where she works to advance and support the NP profession at the state and national levels. She is also a member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) Champions program for clinicians and researchers interested in improving care for cancer survivors.

Cancer Survivorship

Today on the pod we are going to talk about the science behind nutritional neuroscience with Stephen Fleming, PhD. This scientific discipline studies the effects various components of the diet such as minerals, vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, fats, dietary supplements, synthetic hormones, and food additives have on neurochemistry, neurobiology, behavior, and cognition, according to the journal Nutritional Neuroscience.

An expert on nutrition and cognitive development, Dr. Fleming is also the co-founder and CEO of Traverse Science, Inc., a company that helps researchers at global nutrition organizations take a visual and evidence-based approach to scientific substantiation.

He found his roots first in psychology (B.S) and later as a neuroscientist (PhD) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His mission is to create tools, teams, and frameworks that enable others to cut through misinformation and data overload to understand the science.

Nutritional Neuroscience

The gut microbiome has been linked to a wide range of diseases including diabetes, autism, anxiety, and obesity and may affect how patients respond to chemotherapy or other medicines. How can the gut microbiome have so many roles? How does nutrition and the diet affect this?

Scott Jackson, PhD, leader of the recently created Complex Microbial Systems Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) joins GW Integrative Medicine Podcast to discuss the gut microbiome and how nutrition interacts with this hot new organ.

Dr. Jackson is leading international efforts to improve microbiome and metagenomic measurements by organizing inter-lab studies, developing reference materials and reference methods, and developing in vitro tools that allow us to better understand microbial community resilience and evolution. Prior to joining NIST, he was a principal investigator with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  At the FDA, his research focused on characterizing the global genomic diversity of enteric pathogens, with applications for food safety, bioforensics, and public health.
