Can’t Get Away Explores the conjunction between chaos and beauty. Written in a time of personal uncertainty and introspection, the song’s sonic soul is unnerving and dissonant. However, in writing the song I found comfort within that dissonance, and with that came a beautiful call and response relationship between the songs' various parts. Each element of the track is a part of this story that is built upon through sound and revisited throughout the song, building upon and interacting with the other elements to form the piece. I did this as an ode to life being 22. Each past experience I've had has always been brought back at some point to push me closer to the answers I'm looking for. Each memory is remembered and used until ultimately like the “bridge” in “Can’t Get Away” it all comes together to truly create something astounding. Both sides of the spectrum, chaos, and beauty alike are being played harmoniously to prove a point that this journey of life requires balance. Can’t Get Away is a culmination of these ideas packed into a piece that can be listened to at surface level, while also serving as an intricate story to be dug into.

“In My Head” is the product of Philia’s most recent dive into house music while still keeping his signature use of granulation and ambience. The song was written during arguably Philia’s toughest battle with anxiety and finding his way in the world. Uniquely this is what made this song so impactful and interesting at its core. If you really listen, the song itself is a bubbly, bouncy house driven track that makes you want to move your feet and enjoy life at its fullest. The lyrics however, which Philia carefully sampled and played with contradict this premise and share feelings of loneliness and struggles of love while being young. Together these two elements dance gracefully together to create something truly interesting. “In My Head” is a track that can both be played at 2 AM, and in your bed alone. It perfectly dissects what life is in your early 20’s, a constant battle between freedom and feeling caged .“In My Head” takes influences from the likes of Kasbo, Mochakk, and Disclosure, which can be heard at various points during this song especially during the bridge where you can hear the ambience of Kasbo mixing with that signature chorus that is heard on so many disclosure records followed by a thumping bassline inspired by Mochakk’s song Jealous. “In My Head” is sure to be one of Philia’s greatest singles to date, and even more prove the intricate worlds his songs create.

To feel Philia is to experience a fondness, especially an abnormal love for a specific thing. For Wisconsin based producer, vocalist and artist Nathan Blanck, this is at the core of what it means to make music for him as well as how he hopes those listening to him will feel. For Nathan, Philia represents the love we can experience through sound, and the joy of existing in communities that share music. The idea that music can bring people together, it can save people. Philias music isn’t only made for instant gratification, it’s also made to be listened to years later, provoke and cherish those memories that created who we are.   

Blanck’s early musical influences, singing in church and various vocal ensembles, were defined by community and the sharing of songs. He is a self-taught producer and avid explorer of all musical genres. Discovering electronic music through artists such as Flume, Odesza, and Aphex Twin, Nathan felt distinctively drawn to the genre as it challenged much of his classical upbringing and offered a space free of boundaries and ripe for experimentation. With his focus on granulated distorted dissonance, airy vocals, and lush large synths, Philia’s music is sure to invoke inner wandering. While also producing serotonin filled thoughts and friendly environments for all to listen to together.

The essence of his artist project Philia, is not just that of pushing musical boundaries but also of understanding sound and production at its core. Philia is making a name for himself by combining the world of electronic unpredictability with comforting resolutions that will keep you guessing what’s next.
