Paul is my bandmate. He plays drums in our band Library Siesta, and is an amazing musician and friend, but we come from very different backgrounds. Paul has a music degree and if you throw a shoe he could tell you the note of the sound it makes within seconds of it hitting a wall. I'm a self-taught DIY artist with punk ethos, and after six years of playing music I'm still not sure which chord is B major. Unsurprisingly there are some disagreements in our band from time to time.

Released on his 25th birthday, 'Fuck You I Won't Do What You Tell Me, Paul' is a bedroom recording project where I do all the things Paul won't let me do in Library Siesta. Each track has been specially crafted to spite him (with love and affection, of course).

• Paul hates count-ins, so I’ve left them all in.
• Paul has perfect pitch, so I didn’t tune up before recording.
• Paul can’t stand when songs of the same key are played back-to-back, so this EP is entirely in C major.
• Paul told me one of my new LS songs had the word ‘bed’ too many times, and suggested I change some of the lyrics.  That song had 4 beds.  Bed song has 107.
• I wrote Boybands for LS in 2011.  We played it live for a while but eventually it got neglected.  When we recorded our album I wanted to add it as an eleventh song to our recording schedule, but Paul wouldn’t let me.
• Common People by Pulp is Paul’s favourite song.  I literally tore it apart.  I printed out the lyrics, ripped them up, re-arranged them and then sung them to the original melody.
• There’s one wrong chord in Common People. Just one.
• Paul hates Melbourne.  He hates people talking about how cool it is.  He especially hates when people from Sydney move there.  So ‘Trade Homegrown Veggies With Your Neighbours’ is about how cool Melbourne is and why we should all move there.
• Paul loves sport, and hates Melbourne teams.  I did a shit job of mixing, so you can barely hear it, but there’s a line in ‘Trade Homegrown Veggies With Your Neighbours’ that goes: ‘better teams to support and cheaper transport’.  If he could hear it I’m sure he’d be triggered.
• Paul is always telling me to shorten my song titles.  Originally ‘Trade Homegrown Veggies With Your Neighbours’ was going to be called ‘Melbourne’.  Then I remembered his contempt for unnecessarily long song titles, picked the longest line in the song and made it the title.
• Paul never got past the second episode of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared because of how horrible the sound of the clock was, so I sampled it.
• Paul hates EPs.
