In February 2021, a substitute teacher read the n-word out loud with no warning in class twice in an African American History class. The second time, it was caught on video by a student in the class.

On May 3, 2021, the Tennessean reported that school spokeswoman Jeanne Natwick said that after the faculty member said the word while reading a first-person historical text, she immediately apologized.

We are only releasing the audio of the incident to protect the identity of the student who captured the video. In the audio, the teacher does not apologize for using the slur, nor does she even hesitate when speaking it. In the video, it is clear that the students reacted visibly to the slur as the teacher continues to read without acknowledging their reaction.

Jeanne Natwick also said that "it is our expectation that all members of our school community will refrain from ever using the N-word -- or any other offensive slur or curse word -- in our school and classrooms."

Since forming in January 2021, we have released multiple testimonials addressing the freedom with which white students and faculty at Brentwood Academy use racial slurs in the hallways and classrooms of the school. There appears to be no official school policy around the use of racial slurs, other than the "expectation" that community members will not use them.
