@user-529844759 Kimia Koochakzadeh-Yazdi (b. 1997 Tehran, Iran) is a California/Vancouver-based composer
and performer. She writes for hybrid instrumental/electronic ensembles, creates electroacoustic and audiovisual works, and performs electronic music. Kimia explores the unfamiliar familiar while constantly being driven by the concepts of motion, interaction,
and growth in both human life and in the sonic world. 


 Being a cross-disciplinary artist, she has actively collaborated on projects evolving
around dance, film, and theatre. Kimia’s work has been showcased by organizations
such as Iranian Female Composer Association, Music on Main, Western Front, Vancouver New Music, and Media Arts Committee. She has been featured in The New York Times, Georgia Straight, MusicWorks Magazine, Vancouver Sun, and Sequenza 21. Her work has been
performed at festivals around the world including Ars Electronica Festival, Festival Ecos Urbanos, Tehran Contemporary Sounds, AudioVisual Frontiers Virtual Exhibition, The New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, Yarn/Wire Institute, Ensemble Evolution,
New Music on the Point, wasteLAnd Summer Academy, EQ: Evolution of the String Quartet, Modulus Festival, and SALT New Music Festival. 


She holds a BFA in Music Composition from Simon Fraser University’s Interdisciplinary
School for the Contemporary Arts, having studied with Sabrina Schroeder and Mauricio Pauly. Kimia is currently pursuing her DMA degree in Music Composition at Stanford University.

"Baharan Khojasteh Bad” or “Blessed Spring" is the name of one of the first and one of the most famous revolutionary hymns that was broadcast on Iranian radio and television after the 1979 revolution and the fall of the imperial system (Pahlavi regime) in commemoration of the anniversary of the return of Khomeini to Iran. During the first 40 days following the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16th 2022 many hymns and revolutionary songs were written in support of the uprising and the Woman, Life, Freedom movement that called for a revolution against the islamic regime and the end of gender apartheid and freedom. One of these songs was a cover of "Baharan Khojasteh Bad" which conserved the melody but changed the lyrics to chant the names of the girl's like Mahsa Amini and Nika Shakarami who's tragic death symbolize the true fascist and myogenic face of the regime. The new cover also chants the name of Vida Movahed who sparked anti-hijab protests in Iran in 2018 by waving her white scarf like a flag. I fell in love with this cover because not only did it honor the young girls and women who were at the forefront of this revolution but it also put a hand on the 1979 revolution which was hiijacked from it’s democratic course to reappropriate it. So I chose to work this song and named it “Be Mahsa, Be Nika” which means “In the name of Mahsa, in the name of Nika”.This revolution is accompanied by horrific acts of violence and torture on behalf of the Iranian regime, the news of which we follow on social media everyday. I thought it necessary to make a track to honour the bravery of the iranian people who are fighting this regime and fuel it with powerful and uplifting energy. It deliberately sounds as if I m singing through a megaphone during a protest. Something simple and innocent about the beat keeps it light. Only with light can we defy this darkness… Woman, Life, Freedom.

Apranik Recordings is a musical embodiment of the thousands of years of strength and defiance of Iranian women. Founded as a response to the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement of the 2022 Iranian Revolution, Apranik Recordings aims highlight the work of electronic music artists whose music embodies the mission of the label: to be strong, to be outspoken, to be bright, and to inspire. Apranik Recordings is a collaborative project between Nesa Azadikhah and AIDA. 
Our first release is a VA Compilation Album of all Iranian Women Artists, in solidarity with the women-led revolution that is currently taking place in Iran.
