Lola Kirke has played many roles as an actress (“Mozart in the Jungle,” “Gone Girl,” “Winning Time”), but as a musician her sights have always been set squarely on Country. 
“I’ve always been drawn to dynamic parts for women, and I can’t think of any other genre where we can be mothers, heartbreakers, glamorous, gritty, drunk, tender, and everything in between all at once.”
After relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville in 2020, Kirke released her critically acclaimed sophomore LP “Lady For Sale” on the much respected Third Man Records @ in 2022, and played sold out shows with the likes of Jenny Lewis @, and Margo Price @ . 
“Lola is a stunning combination of wildness, beauty, and humor, with a voice that digs inside my head and heart,” says the legendary musician, and previous guest Rosanne Cash(L’envie #107) @ , one of Kirke’s all time heroes, and a collaborator on her forthcoming EP “Country Curious,” produced by Elle King and arriving early 2024. “I honestly adore this woman and count myself both a friend and her biggest fan.” Cash continues.

L'envie #161 :: Lola Kirke

First new sounds from Futuropaco in five years. Futuropaco, a.k.a. Justin Pinkerton from Oakland, California creates colourful psychedelic music - a pan-cultural cratedigger’s delight that welcomes in a wide range of elements - from afro-beat and post rock to Italian library music and heavy psych. 

The title translates to “The Glass Fortress” and is a reference to the fragility of the superpowers of the world, such as the US: “As we witnessed in the height of the pandemic and it's after effects, it doesn't take much to take down one of these entities that hide behind the facade of power and indestructibility. One tiny crack can trigger an unstoppable catastrophe.” says Pinkerton of the album concept. “Though Futuropaco songs are instrumental I tend to channel my feelings about politics and the world through them. Unfortunately, the world can be a terrible place at times, so there is a sort of dark, at times angry, theme to these songs. But, instead of writing lyrics to convey those feelings, I just let the music do the talking."

But despite (or perhaps because of) it’s underlying dark inception, Justin’s new album is a terrific ride, from the first notes of earth-shaking opener “Muro Vuoto” to the mysterious and dreamy closer “Omicidio Per Soldi”. Not a second is wasted on this record, every vinyl groove is packed with ideas and sounds that demand attention, whether they originate from Justin’s vintage Moog synthesizers, his Turkish Saz, fuzz guitars or flute layered on top of Pinkerton’s meticulously crafted, yet bone shaking drum fills. You could spend hours analysing what’s going on musically, but that’s beside the point - the nine tracks offered here are simply an invitation to surrender yourself to the head-spinning grooves and mesmerizing timbres. A truly unique psychedelic experience, and this is just volume 1!

Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life - six tracks of affecting, deep vibes. 

'In Gold' is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats.

Title track 'City Life' is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads - as well as a killer vocal. 

'Make My Piece' is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. 

Next one is 'Up In This', starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb's signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones. 

'Without You' is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track wrapping up this journey.
