Spatial Cruelty is a meticulously constructed binaural work that immerses the listener in a disorienting, ritualised soundscape shaped by the principles of Antonin Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty. The piece unfolds as an unbroken sequence of sonic confrontations, where industrial machinery groans and grinds against layers of distorted vocal fragments, metallic resonance, and low‑frequency pulses that seem to press physically against the body. Every element is positioned with surgical precision in three‑dimensional space, creating the sensation of being surrounded, pursued, and at times engulfed by the sound.  

The composition alternates between moments of suffocating proximity, where whispers and breath scrape directly against the ear, and vast, reverberant expanses that evoke abandoned factories or cavernous ritual chambers. Percussive impacts arrive without warning, cutting through the texture like sudden flashes of light in darkness, while drones and harmonic overtones build an atmosphere of sustained tension. The pacing is deliberate and unrelenting, designed to bypass intellectual interpretation and provoke an instinctive, visceral response.  

Drawing on Artaud’s vision of theatre as a total sensory assault, Spatial Cruelty rejects passive listening in favour of an embodied experience. It demands attention, manipulates perception of space and time, and transforms sound into a physical force that unsettles, overwhelms, and ultimately leaves the listener altered.
