Is all that is fragmented broken? My father speaks to me in ‘broken’ English and I speak to him in
‘broken’ Polish, this is our own special way of communicating. He knows what I mean when I
mispronounce a word and I know what he means when he makes syntactical errors; I scold those
who correct him. roo[u]t[e]s is an intertextual and unending project; a dialogue that explores
patterns of migration and how these movements (in)form language and the entangled intricacies of
selfhood.

What does a gut feeling sound like?

Eleanor Zurowski, this year’s columnist, is producing sonic responses in response to each issue of Framework in 2019. Each piece will be an accumulation of field recordings, samples, lecture snippets, spoken word and contemporary music. For this issue, Eleanor is exploring the fugitive eruptions of, and leaks from, the body. Breathing in, crying out, rumbling, whistling, swallowing spit, belching, erupting into tears; extra-linguistic moments when our bodies speak for – or to – us.

What does a gut feeling sound like? - Eleanor Zurowski - Framework #25

Eleanor Zurowski, this year’s Framework columnist, is producing sonic responses in response to each issue of Framework in 2019. Each piece will be an accumulation of field recordings, samples, lecture snippets, spoken word and contemporary music. For this issue, Eleanor writes:

'Listening is an act where we make space. Space is always contentious, contested. In listening we share in the voices, sounds and experiences of others. We become aware of the space we occupy, the conditions that produce this and how they can be renegotiated. Listening creates space amongst and between bodies. Listening commands a certain type of intimacy. As Moten so eloquently puts, “writing alone, by and as oneself, leads to brokenness. Writing together can generate incompleteness.” So, "we should write together to incomplete each other...our care, can never be of the self, but only of that touch, that rub, that press” as voices, sounds and experiences intermingle, rewrite each other and hold each other in the careful act of listening, the considered act of space making.'

How can we measure an air pocket? - Eleanor Zurowski - Framework #26

Eleanor Zurowski & Ryley Edwards ‘Subject To Attached Conditions’ , 2019, soundscape, text composed from City of Sydney Notice of Determination [Text Wrapping Break] 107-109 Regent Street CHIPPENDALE NSW 2008. 

‘Subject To Attached Conditions’ investigates the collected infrastructure of club environments. It makes visible the (often uneasy) interplay between culture, digital networks, waste and capital exchange on stolen land. Drawing links with parasite and host relationships – the state & citizen, DJ & dancer - it looks at the ways we are tangled up in the physical space we each move through.
