Alice "Turiya" Coltrane was a visionary pianist, composer, and bandleader who spent the majority of her life seeking spiritually in both music and her private life. She released seven solo albums on Impulse! during the latter part of the decade and into the '70s, which wove together the strains of her musical thinking: modal jazz, gospel hymns, blues, Hindi devotional music, and 20th century classical sonorities.

A soft downtempo mix from one of NYC's finest techno DJs. In a post-pandemic New York that has witnessed an explosion of new talent, Emma Olson, who goes by Umfang, is by now a recognized veteran who is well-respected for her fluency in techno – and not just as a DJ, but also as someone engaged with its political history and contemporary social contexts. Her psychedelic all-vinyl sets move the body AND mind and are proof that the true skill of the DJ isn’t necessarily what one plays, but how.

“I have been wanting to make a slower mix for a long time which is hilariously challenging for me coming from mostly playing techno,” says Umfang. “I make subdued sparse music and have had a difficult time closing the gap between soundscapes I'm drawn to and the music I play in the club.” 

The result is the sound of a bridge. “This is a reflection of some intentional digging for downtempo, a desire to feature the music my friends are making now that excites me, and the one-off ambient tracks from techno artists that often don't find a place in the club.” Considering these new tempos and textures, the variety here is cohesive, and it also feels intimate — the sound of an artist earnestly building out new comfort zones.

'Somewhere along the line Coltrane’s soprano sax runs out of steam. Now it’s McCoy Tyner’s piano solo I hear, the left hand carving out a repetitious rhythm and the right layering on thick, forbidding chords. Like some mythic scene, the music portrays somebody’s - a nameless, faceless somebody’s - dim past, all the details laid out as clearly as entrails being dragged out of the darkness. Or at least that’s how it sounds to me. The patient, repeating music ever so slowly breaks apart the real, rearranging the pieces. It has a hypnotic, menacing smell, just like the forest'
