Today, we present a very special mix beamed down to us directly from Naffi HQ. The selection includes tracks from Alice Coltrane, Augustus Pablo, Pharoah Sanders, The Chordettes, and others along with an unreleased B.R. tune that references a very familiar nocturne... The mix also comes with a short note from Brenda herself: "home, car, wherever y'are.......a selection of soul enlightening to lift the spirit music. Hope this finds 'You and Yours' keeping good and well - especially over these past couple of crazee years."

We asked our friend and NTS GOAT Bianca Lexis to put together a mix for the Winter Solstice. 

"I wanted to put together intimate songs that remind me of going back home and spending time with loved ones gathered around our favorite comfort foods and a cozy fire," says Bianca. "Hopefully it gives the listener a similar feeling of nostalgic warmth :)"

An idiosyncratic outlier in the history of 20th Century guitarists, Gábor Szabó's intricate style is as unique as his origin story. Inspired by cowboy films as a teenager whilst living in his native Budapest, Hungary, Szabó was mostly self taught, and serenaded diners and drinkers in establishments around the city in the 1950s.

He escaped political turmoil in Hungary, moving with his family to California, where he attended Berklee College, and soon began playing with California jazz artists like Chico Hamilton, and eventually with legendary bassist Ron Carter. Shaped both by this jazz experience and the Hungarian folk music of his youth, Szabo's solo career was a sonic one-off, filled with free-wheeling, delicate psychedelia and unpredictable melodic inventiveness.

Elise Kravets is just in time for the summer with her newest collection of points. This latest mix, the second one for her remote residency, feels like the French summers she undoubtedly has experienced many times. It equally feels at home on a 60s cruise ship or a yacht as it does at a commune or a thrift store. The mix masterfully uses the lounge sounds of eras long gone mixed with folk to craft a mix that is equally relaxing and haunting. The melancholy produced never feels unsettling - instead, it creates a contemplative beauty. Pointillism describes the technique of this painting - the style is more akin to romanticism; a quaint landscape in the French heartland with long-abandoned and overgrown farmhouses. Sublime, exciting, full of stories untold, and emanating some kind of abstract sadness that quite quickly resolves into solace.
