After clean water, childhood immunisation is the most effective intervention for protecting children against infectious diseases. In the UK, vaccine uptake rates are high, in spite of some parents considering immunisation to be unnecessary or even detrimental to children's health and wellbeing. This lecture will review recent vaccine safety scares, and how we might learn from such events to ensure successful immunisation programmes in the future.

Governing Academic Life - Co-operative higher education - Co-operative High… [Audio]

How might the work of the American film director David Lynch speak to contemporary urban and architectural concerns?

Drawing on his recently published book 'The Architecture of David Lynch', Richard Martin discusses how the worlds Lynch has built and filmed force us to confront the strange forces involved in urban change, the social relations architecture constitutes, the uneasy feelings of being at home, and the presence of the past in the spaces of the present. In the words of Peter Eisenman, ‘All our lives are spent learning how to get it: Lynch un-learns us’. 

The discussion is chaired by Iain Borden (Professor of Architecture and Urban Culture, Bartlett School of Architecture).

Dr. Richard Martin works at the intersections of film, art and architecture. He is the author of The Architecture of David Lynch (Bloomsbury, 2014), and his articles and reviews have appeared in the European Journal of American Culture, Senses of Cinema, Apollo and The Modernist. Having completed his PhD at Birkbeck, University of London, where he taught literature, visual culture and critical theory, he is currently a Teaching Fellow at King’s College London and a Visiting Lecturer at Middlesex University. He is also the organiser of a series of public events and courses at Tate Modern.

Alexandre Apsan Frediani (UCL) - From services to dialogues: Reflections on action learning initiatives across the North-South divide

The Social Development Practice MSc at UCL has established collaborations with the international NGO Practical Action and the Camden network of CitizensUK. The objectives of these partnerships has been to develop action learning initiatives that might support residents affected by uneven urban development trends. This paper considers the conditions of urban governance shaping these partnerships.

Making Space For Community Participation: Learning From Euston

Say Burgin and Kate Dossett from the University of Leeds will discuss the framing of equality and diversity issues in British Higher Education around questions of race and gender exclusion. Drawing on both national conversations around gender inequalities in the wake of reports on inequalities by the Royal Historical Society and the Runnymede Trust and our local work on inequalities in higher education we will focus on three particular problems: narratives of progress; the need to collect ever  more ‘proof’ that inequalities exist; and the framing of inequalities around individual behaviours. Analysing these narratives and the academy’s investment in them opens up space to discuss who does the work of addressing inequalities and where.

UCL Americas seminar: Stop Asking the Women to...: Cultures of Inequality in Higher Education

Head of Teaching in UCL Anthropology, Dr Caroline Garaway, and undergraduate students Emily Garvin and Mahalia Changlee discuss how they helped improve diversity in the reading lists of the undergraduate Anthropology programme. In a project funded by UCL’s Liberating the Curriculum, the students worked with academic staff evaluate and improve the diversity of the prescribed reading lists.
