Susan Benn first studied textile design as a school student at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where she was taught by a set of now well-known textile designers, including Annie Albers, Loja Saarinen, Marianne Strengell, and Lillian Holm. From 1958 - ’59 Susan studied Textiles at the Royal College of Art, and whilst at the RCA, visited Scotland and Bernat Klein, subsequently working with Bernat Klein Ltd. and Bute Looms Ltd. as a textile designer in the early 1960s.

Jingle 29 - Radiophrenia

Two ten minute compositions from Glasgow based artist Claudia Vasiliu utilising a variety of field recordings and material from the freesound archives. Originally put together and distributed on duplicated cassette tapes for ‘That’s Life!’ at Good Press, Glasgow [April 2016]

Mechanical whirrings and a slow, steady rhythmical pulse guide us (the listener) through the majority of the first side, crackling static and ominous church bells fall in and out of time until our extended equilibrium is broken by a fade into near nothingness. A slight drone persists whilst hurried footsteps and the sound of opening and closing doors drag us into an altogether more peaceful state of mind, a state of mind soon interrupted as one begins to question the reason for this departure. Low whispers and distant coughs come and go as we gradually approach the sound of somewhere outdoors, still and silent but for trickles of rain and scattering insects on the peripheral. Perceived nuclear fall-out or the final days of a rural laundrette?

The second side is reminiscent of Daniel Emmanuel’s ventures into new age exotica, but with all synthesizer efforts removed and replaced with the far away murmurings of a rainforest dwelling microcosm. Wild animal noises appear and subsequently recede whilst low reaching violin tones linger in the background. There is a comparison to be drawn here to the ever wonderful ‘Turkish Square’ by Moniek Darge just for sensory evocativeness alone.
