If you like weird sounds, you will love the daxophone. This unusual instrument was invented by Hans Reichel about three decades ago. It consists of a thin strip  of wood called a tongue that is usually bowed, and is mounted on a soundbox containing contact microphones. Pitch and timbre are controlled by moving a rounded wooden wedge called a dax along the tongue. 

Here are some short audio examples taken from one of my custom made daxophones. These are recorded directly from the daxophone output into a looper pedal, without any amps, effects or reverberation. Each short section (lasting about 30 seconds) is played on a single tongue, and the tonal variation is achieved by altering how and where you bow the tongue. My aim was to provide a bit of an idea of how remarkably broad the range of sounds is that you can get from this instrument.

A Short Intro

This is a short demo of my "Speak and Drum" circuit bent speak and spell unit (math version) which produces midi output on-the-fly from the internal audio signal. In this demo, I've sent the midi to my 808 (clone)  drum machine. What you hear is some short excerpts from two 3 minute "live runs" with the speak-and-math and drum machine recorded onto a single track.

S M Demo

This is a short demo of the "Speak and Drum" circuit bent speak and spell unit (french version), which can improvise midi drum triggers on-the-fly from the internal audio signal. In this demo, I've sent the midi to my 808 (clone) drum machine. What you hear is taken from a single short "live run" with the S&D and drum machine recorded onto a single track and no added effects of any sort.

The Speak and Drum has a very  wide sonic palette, but in this clip showcases a few of its noisier sounds, and in particular its unique "WARP" control in a few spots. It's briefly at maximum effect at 1:03 where it demonstrates its characteristic howl.
