This recording was commissioned by The Tanya Horne School of Dance, Halkirk, Caithness as a piece of music for dance participants to choreograph to.  Highland Dancing has grown in recent years with the addition of choreography, which uses traditional steps to form new dance patterns.  The year 2020 is the 14th year of Tanya's annual highland dance festival.  Rather than the usual competitive live event, dance participants have been sent this music to create a choreography to be submitted for a performance rather than competition this year.  A celebration of highland dance will be uploaded to facebook, with this track being utilised by premier dancers for the highland dance choreography section of the festival

Highland Reel for May 2020

Three tunes, composed by Karen Steven; The March for the Grey & Common Seal Haul-Out, The Stroma Swelkie & The Expert Carpenter.  Karen on fiddle, with Anne Taylor from Midmar, Aberdeenshire on keyboards and Alastair Macdonald from Petawawa, Canada on Accordion & synthesizer.  Really grateful to Anne and Alastair for recording these tunes remotely, and for Alastair in mixing and adding EQ and a touch reverb to enhance the sound.  Hope you enjoy.  The 3 tunes were composed in 2020, 2000 and 2010 respectively.

Two tunes composed by myself, put together and sent to Alastair Macdonald, great musician and sound engineer, who has added 1st accordion, 2nd accordion and keyboard accompaniment - giving lots of depth to the sound.  The phrasing in the tune is totally suited to highland and ceilidh dancing, something that both Karen & Alastair are very experienced at playing for.
