SB 1556 Hwy 30 bill. Our community came out to testify at the public hearing, but we need to keep supporting our bill.

This bill would prevent school districts from limiting certain books in their library. There are already more than 2000 pieces of testimony from citizens admitted.
HB 4094 would allow the issuing of Q Bonds for the building of new courthouses.

This is a fix that would impact two of our counties, Columbia and Tillamook. It is a simple bill with a big impact.

From the District February 17th 2024

Over half way through the short session!  Join me for this week's episode of From the District.  

Last week things slowed down some as we wait for House bills to make there way to their respective Senate committee.  But that has afforded me more a window of time to meet with constituents and work through issues that are facing our district.

February 24th 2024 with State Senator Suzanne Weber

HB 4002A There was quite a bit of debate working on this bill.  Some wanted full repeal of Measure 110, and some did not want to recriminalize drugs.    At the final vote it truly was a bipartisan vote both Aye and Nay.  But going forward as long as Governor Kotek signs this bill, we will no longer be the state to give free passes for drug use and possession.

HB 4026  Let's talk about the housing bill.  Oregon has some of the most complicated land use laws in the nation.  Some cities have gone through a very long process to work through all the required pathways to expanding their buildable lands.  This can take many years of public process.  Part of this bill will protect that public process from being subverted just as it is coming to completion.

Monday we should read SCR 213, honoring SPC Kenny Leisten, on the Senate floor and send it to the House to make it through Rules and onto the House floor for a vote by then end of the week!

I am pleased to see that Governor Kotek has signed HB 4002 that recriminalized drug possession.   This bill will give the option to go to treatment or go to jail.  

HB 4024 the new limits on campaign contributions. This was a bipartisan effort.  However, like anything else we pass, it is not perfect.  

SB 1576 recreational immunity!  The result of a lawsuit just down the coast from us.  Without recreational immunity, many of our public trails were being closed off.  We were able to pass SB 1576 that has allowed our public entities to reopen our public trails and recreation areas.  

We made it to the end of the legislative session and it’s time to follow up with constituents and issues that are important to them in the future.  

First lawsuit around the HCP.  The Jewell school district has filed a lawsuit against the state and I applaud them for doing this.  Clatsop County is going to take a huge hit under this specific habitat conservation plan.

Join me today for a lively discussion on the Habitat Conservation Plan. With this specific plan, narrowly chosen by appointed members of the Board of Forestry by 1 vote, how do we fund our schools, our county governments, and the department of forestry now?   We worked hard to ring this bell before this decision was made, to no avail.  Now others outside of our district are finally stepping in to ask how do we deal with this forced shortage of revenue.  A day late and a dollar short.

I moved to Tillamook in 1970 to escape the cold weather of the Midwest. I taught first through third grade children for 30 years. I've operated two small businesses, served on Tillamook City Council and then as mayor.

As a longtime local elected official, I am a big believer in state legislation that protects the ability of Oregon’s distinct communitie​​s to decide for themselves what their priorities are

I have spent my career helping kids and families right her in Rural Northwest Oregon.
