Season 2 Episode 8: Live at Academy 2021 Boston with Clark Chang, OD

Dr. Ian Flitcroft joins hosts Craig Norman and Dr. Jason Jedlicka at the Global Specialty Lens Symposium in Las Vegas to discuss his work as a myopia specialist. He describes how his first presentation on myopia occurred in 1996, long before awareness, understanding, and common treatment of the disease became widespread. Flitcroft also discusses his years of research identifying factors that influence myopia’s onset and progression, and the effect of genetic blueprints versus environmental stimuli.

The Evolution of Myopia Control and Nature vs. Nurture

Dr. Eef van der Worp stops by May Eye Interrupt to talk with Craig Norman and Dr. Jason Jedlicka about how so much has changed since he authored his guide on fitting scleral lenses over a decade ago. The biggest change, he says, is in the improvement of solutions, partly thanks to good topographers and imaging of the ocular surface. Though Dr. van der Worp hopes specialty soft lenses will take off, he acknowledges more research is needed to understand how they behave on the eyes, and how the optics will change as they bend and flex on the eyes. As for what’s next? He’s excited to see more exploration on measuring individual aberrations to create an optimal lens as well as advancements in daily disposable customized lenses created through customized molds.

Lens Chat About Sclerals and Specialty Soft Lenses

Hosts Dr. Jason Jedlicka and Craig Norman sit down to chat with Dr. Langis Michaud about his career. In the interview, Dr. Michaud shares his guiding principle as a researcher and innovator, which is to ultimately help eye care professionals offer better solutions to treat patients. As a clinician himself, he knows firsthand the frustration of not being able to help his patients with effective solutions, which led to his work with scleral lens product designs and myopia treatments. Lastly, he shares the keys to compliance with myopia control.

The Source of Innovation

In today’s episode of May Eye Interrupt, Dr. Jason Jedlicka and Craig Norman interview Dr. Daddi Fadel, a pioneer of modern contact lens designs. She joins them to discuss her practice work, the practical application of her research, and efforts to educate more practitioners on how to begin fitting specialty contact lenses. Dr. Fadel also shares her excitement about topics she’s currently researching and others she hopes to investigate in the future, such as if de-centering the optics of the lens for keratoconus patients will improve high-order aberrations. She’s keen on researching if increasing scleral lens diameter can increase comfort for dry eye patients, and which contact lens fitting method (empirical vs. diagnostic) offers a faster and easier solution for different types of patients.

What’s Next for Contact Lens Research?

Hosts Craig Norman and Dr. Jason Jedlicka welcome one of the most widely published optometrists to May Eye Interrupt, Dr. Lyndon Jones. Now serving as the director of the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE), Dr. Jones details his work as an academic after leaving private practice. He talks about CORE’s primary areas of research (myopia control, contact lenses, dry eye, and ocular drug delivery) and how he hopes these academic contributions help doctors do what’s best for patients. In that vein, Dr. Jones shares his view that myopia management will become mainstream and that it’s a duty of care to either treat this disease internally or refer patients out.
